Kiddo called after his NAMI indoc and had flunked his eye exam. I told him I would make a few calls and for him to go back over and reschedule an exam for the following morning. Called my optometrist who was Naval Reserves and asked him.
I hope I can get all this correct. He said to take a pan of warm water and two washclothes. To place the washcloths on each side of the head between the eyes and the ears. Periodically remove the washcloths and massage the area thoroghly. After 30 minutes or so go outside or to any location where one can stare at something far off. Take a very deep breath. Forcefully exhale completely. At the same time, open your eyes fully (bugeyed) and stare at the horizon for 30 seconds or so. Repeat the entire process as necessary.
When the FS asked my son what he had done to improve his eyesight so drastically overnite, he then stated that it was usually O-4s that had to resort to it. Supposedly the more time one spends in near vision environment, the more prevalent this is. It shortens the ocualar muscles and the older one gets, the more difficult it is for them to stretch to far vision requirements. The heat and massaging loosens the muscle.
I was taking golf lessons at the time, and while explaining it to the pro, I simply did the exhale portion. First the 50 yd marker cleared, and after 10 minutes or so , I could read all the way down to the 250 yd marker. It does work. How long I don't have a clue. But definitely long enough for the annual physical if you do it the night before.
