Failure to conform?

I was talking to someone about enlistment, and he mentioned something about how you can still get out of the Marines within the first six months after you enlist if you really don't want to be there? Essentially a six month "adjustment" period where you can still get out for "failure to conform" or something like that.

I've never heard of such a thing, so I was just wondering if anyone had any information about it.

Also, if you enlist, and then for some reason get discharged early, would it be possible to still get selected for PLC?

Thanks for any info.

I don't know what the regs are on this, washing out after six months that is.

Getting selected for PLC after washing out after six month enlisted? That's iffy and good bet the odds are against you. You gotta ask yourself "If I told the Corps I couldn't handle it after six months as a junior Marine, why should they accept me to be a leader of Marines?" Or "Could I handle being a leader in an organization I washed out as a junior?"

Se where I'm coming from?

I think you're talking about 'failure to adapt'. It happens and is not a good thing. Pretty much means you can't and shouldnt be there. Chances of getting selected to an officer program after would be slim to none.

While there's no real discharge called "Failure to Adapt", said failure will lead to an Administrative Separation. As the previous post mentioned, it does happen, and it is very much a BAD thing. I had a LCpl who worked for me that was very close to the failure to adapt mark, and would have been separated... Had he not seriously injured another motorist with his uninsured vehicle, that is. He got the Big Chicken Dinner (Bad Conduct Discharge) instead. There may be a tiny percentile of people who cannot mentally adapt to a military lifestyle, but I'd say that the majority of them are just dirtbags who should consider themselves lucky to have gotten off lightly. (Sorry, I just spent 3 hours witnessing NJP this afternoon, and I'm bitter.)

wow it makes total sense that one would try to basically get kicked out for failure to conform and them come back to lead those same people....

There are no stupid questions...wait, yeah that was one...
Um, where did I ever say those two questions were related? As far as the second question is concerned, I was thinking more in terms of getting medically discharged.

Anyways, thanks for the insight, I was just curious about that stuff because I had never heard of it before.

If you get medically discharged then there isn't really much chance of getting selected for PLC...but thats ok, its always good to ask questions...
