Finishing school and going to OCS

I have an option of choosing when to finish school. My original date to finish and go to OCS was Janurary 2009, but I have finished up my major quicker than I anticipated and I can graduate in August 2008 or October 2008. My classes are quarter length instead of semester length.

As a side bit of information, I am selected for SNFO and all the schooling that would entail that, as my follow on schooling from OCS.

So my question: Is it better to finish up now and head to OCS in the fall, or slow down my graduation date and go in the winter? Would it make a difference in how flight school would pan out?

Thanks for the help.

I'm monitoring this because I could easily graduate a semester early too... although I anticipate a lot of responses to the tune of "are you nuts? College is fun so stay as long as possible!"

No it won't affect flight school.

It WILL affect you by allowing you to sit on your ass, collect a paycheck and drink beer until your OCS date. Your degree completion is only an issue if you graduate LATER than you told them (I'm sure if it was like 6 months early you need to tell your recruiter). It's up to you, YOU decide...

If you were selected under the BDCP program you have to stick to your degree completion plan. If you are going to finish early they will expect you to ship early I would guess. Talk to your recruiter he/she can find out your options.

Being that OCS is now in Newport, I'd say go in the fall... weather wise. RI is kinda miserable in the winter. Also look at what you've got scheduled between now and your original OCS date. If you've got something you want to do, hold off.

As far as flight school goes, don't worry about that until you've finished OCS and are in P-Cola. Its really not going to make a difference. You'll still go through all the same BS and training that we all did.

I'd say the weather is not really a big factor in Newport as compared to Pensacola. If I were in your place I would take as long as possible in college, get paid and then go to OCS. You will have more time to enjoy the last few moments of college and will also be farther ahead in the pay scales once you are an O-1. There's nothing quite like being O-1 over 3 years while in flight school.

I am the same situation, could have taken 2 summer classes and graduated in Aug 08 rather than Dec 08. I am set to leave in Jan 09 as well, but why not keep on collecting checks? I am sure your OCS date will come sooner than you think.
I made the decision to stay in the fall semester. Hang out with your friends and spend Christmas with your family!! No sense in rushing things.
