Hello all,
My question is do you recieve a full physical before starting API? I just got a flight physical and it will be less than two years until i got to api. I heard that there are limited physicals if you already have a current physical. i just barely passed my eye exam for sna and was wondering if they were going to give me another one when i got there. I am in the Plc program with the marines and will be reporting to TBS in sept. Thank all for your clarificiation

I'm possitive you will have another eye exam as soon as you check into Pensacola for API. In the mean time stay hydrated and eat carrots, (in theroy) to try and retain your current vision. At least this is what my mom says :)

Or if you're on a low carb diet you could also use beta carotene supplements =) Those, lutien (sp?) and some bilberry...maybe some bright eyes, too. Don't forget to get enough sleep, minimize time staring at cpu/tv and maybe do some exercises. Most importantly, don't stress over it because it will actually make your vision worse...that and high blood pressure.

Actually you shouldn't have to worry about it, unless you will be 25 or 30 before you start API. Once you have passed the first flight physical you just do short form physicals. On your 25, 30 and +5 bithdays you have to get a full longform again. For the short form physicals you just read the smallest line you can and thats all for the eyes.

really, i didn't know high blood pressure makes your eyesight worse. Thank you for your input all. Also i will swear by bilberry from this time on. it is the sole reason i passed my second eye exam for an sna slot. It works, the first time i went i couldn't read the 20-40 line, the next time, after only 3 weeks of taking bilberry in large doses, i was easily able to read the 20-40 line.

the dosage i took for the bilberry was about 3 1000mg capsules daily. On the bottle it said that you could take from one to three a day so i of course took the maximum. But make sure you get the gel capsules. Liquid is much better and much more concentrated. oh yeah thats another thing, get the concentrated bilberry gel caps. always better to have more. It worked for me so i am sure it can help all of you out. and it was probably more like 4 weeks before my eye exam

Anybody know if you can take the flight physical prior to OCS? I'm in Northern Florida (Jax) and have some time on my hands. Someone mentioned it might be a good idea to get it out of the way. Any thought? Thanks! -JT

I learned this one the hard way to any who have not yet had the pleasure of the long form, don't eat breakfast and drink ONLY water before you go get lab work. I ended up having to spend the entire day only able to drink water before giving 6 vials of blood. I was a little woozy to say the least once I got my blood drawn at 1800.. ended up eating 2 #1's supersized with an iced tea immediately afterwards because it was on the way home and I wasn't planning on moving once I got there. The fries were gone 4 min. after I left the drive thru.

Your first 2 days at OCS are spent getting a full physical. Don't bother trying to do it in advance because they will still do another. Not to mention that it is two of the easiest days at OCS.

Yeah, I just took had the infamous physical last thursday. It's not as bad as some make it out to be. Jeff is right about the ages of 25 and 30. Even if you have had a flight physical in the last 2 years you'll still get a semi-thorough physical. For the eye exam, you'll attempt to read the 20/20 letters, if you can then you move on, if you can't (I couldn't in one eye) then you go to more eye exams. Once I passed those I went to a OPT and he did the thorough eye exam and issued a prescription. Turns out I'm 20/20 in one eye and 20/25 in the other, so I'll have to wear eyeglasses while I'm in the cockpit. As long as you're no worse than 20/40 and CORRECTABLE to 20/20 you'll be fine. That was it for the eye exam, I was relieved!! I then proceded to the hearing test, blood work/pressure, and then I had a Nomi doc review all the paperwork and ask a few questions and I was done. A lot of waiting around though. Hopefully this will set some minds at ease...I doubt it though because I was never at ease about my eyes until after the physical. I start API in the morning, I can't wait!! Good luck to you all.
