I will be going for my flight physical next week and I was wondering if anyone could just give me a heads up on what it will be like? I will be going to Rhode Island so if anyone has any specific info on that it would be great. What time does the physical begin? how long does the whole thing take? Is it mostly waiting around doing nothing until your name is called or are you doing different tests constantly until you are done and can go home? I'm just afraid of being NPQ for not brushing my teeth properly or something like that. Any info you have to satisfy my curiosity would be appreciated.

Steve-

I took the physical last August. I really wouldn't worry too much about it, although, I know that's easier to say than do (and I worried before it, too). I had mine at Newport with about twenty other guys. If I remember correctly, the physical started at about 7, or so (I could be wrong - but I know it wasn't at 4:30 or anything like that). We first filled-out paperwork and then gave blood samples. After that everybody went to different stations for the rest of the day. For example, some people went to the dentist (different building) for what, basically, amounted to a check-up. Others, at that time, had their eyes checked. This was probably the most intensive part of the physical. You'll have your eyes dilated and it's REALLY uncomfortable, especially if you've never had it done before (I hadn't). Other stations included a checkup by the flight surgeon, an EKG/ECG, and height/weight/anthro. measurements. All in all, you'll spend a lot of time sitting-around waiting for the stations to open-up, and it took a total of about four-five hours. I guess it could be different, though, if there are less people taking the physical at the same time. Anyway, good luck, and, again, don't worry about it. If there's anything you should worry about, it's the PFT!!!! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Do they check your hearing? When I went to MEPS i failed for officer qualified but when i took it somewhere else I passed, Im just nervous about the hearing part and can only hear my heart

Yeah...they check your hearing. The test is kinda funny because you hear the beep and then push the button then wait for the beep again, you do that over and over. It's funny because when it's really soft you can't tell if you hear the beep or if it's just your mind playing tricks on you, i must have guessed right because i passed. Don't sweat the physical, it's not like you can do anything to get ready for it anyways, either you're PQ'd or not.

Jake is right. I forgot to mention the hearing test, and it's just like the hearing test at MEPS. I remember the machine telling me that I was pressing the button when there was no tone. I passed, though. So as was said, just do the best you can - you'll do fine!

For all you guys that have been, did your OSO's set this up for you? Does it have to be at the closest Navy base?

My OSO DID set it up for the two of us from his office and one of his Staff Sergeants drove us down. Our physical was at the closest base, however, I'm not sure it had to be.

I was also wondering about the physical. I have a chipped tooth, and a cavity, it may sound stupid, but is that a big deal?

I'm not sure about the chipped tooth, but when you go to dental they'll tell you to get that cavity taken care of before you report to OCS. My understanding is if you don't get it filled before OCS then you'll get sent home.

When I took my flight physical at Davis-Monthan AFB last year I was alone, man alive were there hot female air force girls. Ended up dating one haha. Well anyways, about the hearing test, yeah your mind does play tricks on you after a while, I passed and when all said and done the tech said he had never seen someone with as great a hearing as I had. HAHA Wouldn't you know it, most of the times I pushed the button I know for a fact it was my mind playing tricks on me, or was it hmmm.

I failed the color vision test (took the FALANT test). They think that it may have been a case of nerves and the fact I was exhausted seeing how I was border line and got different ones wrong each time. So they want me to go again in february just for that part of the physical, well at least I'm not out of it yet!

Wildflyin, sorry to hear about the FALANT test. I hope it all works out next go 'round. Could you give us a little break down on what all went on for the flight physical? What did they say about your PRK?

PRK was perfect, completely waiverable...I met all the regs. First thing we did that day was show up at 5AM, fill out paperwork get blood drawn, and give them a urine sample. After that our group went to dental where they took an X-ray of our mouth, took our blood pressure, then a dentist looked over our teeth. Then we all shuttled back to the main building where they started on our eyes. They did our color vision test, and depth perception first. Then a doctor tested our eyes for Glaucoma and then put some uber-dialating drops in our eyes that I still haven't fully recovered from :). While I waited for my eyes to look like I had taken 40 hits of ecstasy, they took me to radiology where they took two chest X-rays. After that it was back up to the eye department where a doctor scanned my eyes to make sure there wasn't any scarring from the PRK (He kept me there a while for his interns to have a look because I was the only PRK person there that month, I was some what of a celebrity for 15 minutes, lol). After that they took me to have my anthros measured and to have an EKG along with blood pressure measured 3 more times (prone, sitting and standing). After that they send you to the head physician to look you over and do a quick check-up. That's pretty much it. I have a good feeling about that color test for the next round. Maybe when I'm not tired the bulbs won't look like they're trying to cross into one another!
