Flight Physical

Hey everyone. I haven't received the OK to go to OCS yet, but I am hoping to go in June with the Marine Corps. I am hoping for air and have already taken the ASTB (7/6/8 OAR 61). I am going for my cyclo eye exam in the morning and then just need to get a great score on my next PFT. Then my package will be complete. Or so I thought.

My OSO said that I will not need a flight physical until after OCS. But I have heard from some of my friends that are already winged aviators that I should be getting the flight physical before OCS. Should I be questioning this? BTW I am going OCC for the full 10 weeks if I am accepted.

As it is late, I don't know who else is on, so I'll give it a shot from what I was told.

I don't know how the Marines differ but I know at OCS for us Navy folk, we get a full flight physical and then we do another one when we check into API. I'm sure you'll get plenty of physicals before you even get to look at a plane. They'll let you know, I'm sure.

EDIT: forgot to mention the obvious. Before they accept you, you will get a physical. I hear you can opt for a flight physical at this time. I, however, went to MEPS..

You will need a valid flight physical before accepting a commission as an air contract, since you will be doing that the day you leave OCS it could pose a problem. Something that might be causing the confusion is that PLC guys who will be going back to college have plenty of time to get a flight physical while submitting their commission request. Its not necessarily that your OSO is trying to trick you, he/she may not be familiar with EVERY facet of the aviation side of the house post OCS because he never really has to deal with it.

Thinking back I don't remember what they did in my OCS company about air contract OCCers but I guess it would be possible for them to do the physical right away when you get there so that it will be ready in time.

Best thing you can do is to talk to your OSO about your concerns (don't make it sound like you are calling him out) and some of the things you've heard or just express your confusion at the process and ask if he can explain it for you. You are ultimately responsible so make sure you ask all your questions in advance. Ask him what happens if they find something on the flight physical and your air contract is turned down? Hope it helps.

I concur with jamnww you need to get your flight physical done before OCC. Remember be tackful when you bring up the subject with your OSO.

sounds very strange to me. one of the first things they did with me was schedule a flight physical. why waste their time/money on my application if I wasn't PQd in the first place? Let alone send you to OCS then see if you're PQd. I'd send your OSO a well written email..

Agree with these guys, you're supposed to take it before you accept your commission. I took mine a week after I got back from seniors. I just asked my OSA I work with here and he said you should have it done before accepting your commission too.
So, just reiterating all the above.

I was 10 week PLC-C and did my flight physical after I came back. The OCC guys need to take it before. More than half the guys who went down to P-Cola with me were OCC who left for the current January class. Double check that you're OCC as opposed to 10-week PLC. If so, you will need it before.

I am a sophomore on PLC air going to juniors this summer. I know your situation is different with OCC and all but I am not getting my physical till senior year, after completing both juniors and seniors OCS.

You get your physical done after all the training is completed because you go back to school after seniors ocs before you accept your commission. OCC'ers get commissioned at the end of the 10 weeks.

Guys, thanks for all your feedback. I am the 10 week PLC course, not OCC like I originally thought. I will be finishing school this December, after OCS, so I am assuming I will do it then. Along with IFS? My brother-in-law flies Hornets out here at Miramar and he told me that I should be able to complete IFS before TBS. Again, something I need to ask my OSO. Anyone done IFS before TBS and is IFS mandatory in the Corps?

Ok, that makes MUCH more sense now...being PLC you will have ample opportunity to do the flight physical after OCS prior to commissioning.

Ask your brother-in-law why he wasn't man enough to go rotary wing? :icon_mi_1 jk.

IFS is required as long as you have not already completed a privates pilot cert. You can do a search on here for more information about IFS but here is a rough down and dirty. Gives you 25 flight hours, can be done in Manasas, Q-town, or Pensacola area. You can do it either before or after TBS but when you do it will largely depend on how many slots are open and what the Marine Corps needs...

If you have further questions feel free to ask.

I figured that might be the case if your OSO was telling you to do it after. Good job checking though. PM me or post if you have any questions about the PLC-C/flight physical stuff.
