Next year i will start going to the California Maritime Academy an will be doing MMR (merchant marine reserve) and I will be commissioned right after i graduate (hopefully in the navy). Is API the first thing that I will do? Or are there other schools that i will have to go to? Thanks

After commissioning, if you don't have a private pilot license you'll go through Introductory Flight Screening (IFS) while in Pensacola, then API.

Are you sure the California Maritime Academy can provide a flight school guarantee from Merchant Marine Reserve program? Most folks I have met in those type programs end up as blackshoes!

MMR program does not guarantee a flight spot.

I know the other Maritime Academies have NROTC units at them and the whole uniform thing is optional unless you are in one of those programs.

When it comes to senior year, AD package goes in. All of the schools, USMMA, CMA, SUNY, etc, are in the same pool when it comes to applicants.

Not many from the other Maritime Academies actually go active duty, so most of the spots end up getting handed over to USMMA. Even then we have less than 20 going active duty Navy this year. 13 of those are flight spots, 10 SNA, 3 SNFO

I dont know how the other schools work, but here at USMMA you can decline going active duty even if you get selected. Generally it makes a lot of people angry if someone turns down a flight spot (happened last year).

This year one person requested SWO, but turned it down to make big $$$ sailing deep sea.

Good answer, it wasn't clear in first post how he expected to get from point A (where you are now) to point B (PCola) and wanted to make sure he knew it wasn't a lock.

^^Negative. I'll get it done at some time I'm sure, but not for a while. Everyone I know who was IFS complete went straight into API unless things have changed.

If you classed up before you did it, do they make you stick around for it before you leave for primary?

NO. God knows when I'll get to do that lovely week of watching "leadership DVDs", but probably sometime between SERE and the fleet.... :sleep_125
