Flying with the sword

Hi everyone,

I am marrying a Marine who is in Primary right now, and we are doing the sword arch as a part of our wedding. Several of the Marines we have asked to do the arch are flying in from out of town. I was wondering if anyone knows what the deal is with flying with the sword. Are you allowed to carry them on or do you have to have them in a hard case and check them?

You have to check them in. Not a big deal though. FedEx makes a good box meant to ship things like blueprints etc. that it fits in nicely. How they pack it is up to them...

when my wife and I got married (in L.A.) we contacted the USC NROTC unit and borrowed swords from them. They had a large stash of Marine and Navy officer swords...

In return, I sent a letter of thanks to the CO along w/ a check for $100 to donate to the Midshipmen fund...

Word to the wise - if you check it with the airlines, box it up really good before you get there. I didn't, and the very bottom of my scabbard is now slightly bent...

Some buddies and I were in the same situation a while back. Went and spent $20 on a hard plastic rifle case at Academy Sports. We fit three Navy swords in there with no problem, and they came out fine on the other side.

(Pop! There goes the first one.)

The hard rifle case is the best bet. I did the same thing. Flew from VA to FL for a wedding. I checked it in at the counter. They showed the TSA guys... also showed them that it wouldn't cut warm butter...
Got to P'cola for the wedding and it was in perfect shape.

Thanks for the info everybody! I knew that they sold hard cases for the swords, but if they guys didn't have them all ready I didn't want to ask them to buy them. I feel sure, though, that all of them have some kind of hard rifle case.

Sounds like a good idea...and with the added benfit of being able to hold rifles!

I don't know about anybody else, but we brought our Mamelukes to Al Asad. We practiced sword manual during down times. Seriously.

anyway, the idea of using a relatively close by ROTC unit was a big help because it saved my arch from having to "schlep" their own from across the country. Getting a gun case, checking it, hoping it doesn't get lost (gotta love baggage claim), etc seemed the bigger pain in the ass. I didn't want to have to put my guys out any more than I had to.

We are lucky that I only live 3 hours away from Whiting field, so almost all of our guys are within driving distance. It is just one or two that are scattered.

I second the hard rifle case thing... When I was in (military) high school I wore a Marine Corps saber that I borrowed from our Deputy Commandant (a Lt Col force recon guy on reserve status). Whenever I would travel with it he let me borrow his rifle case to check it on airlines. Never had a problem. And its a good thing, because he probably would have killed me in my sleep.
