As someone without a aviation background, I've found Ron Machado's Private Pilot Handbook to be quite effective in giving me the sort of ground zero to advanced knowledge in terms of various aviation concepts. These range from aerodynamics, anatomy of the plane, engine performance, weather, instruments and gauges, FAA regulations, airport operations etc... I've found it to be one of those rare books that takes what could be an extremely complex subject and breaks it up into very palatable pieces without distilling the information too much.
I feel very prepared for the aviation section of the ASTB as a result. Of course, I haven't taken the test yet so who knows, this book could be horrible! :)
Worth taking a look at, in my opinion. Anyone else know of this book?

It's Rod Machado and the guy is awesome! His magazines articles tend to be some of the most informative and enjoyable to read out there. I have his Laugh and Learn tape series. Many times I was laughing so hard, it hurt.
