Future and recent BDCP selects

Today I found out that I was the first one in my NRD to ask for a GI Bill deduction of $100 a month for 12 months in order to get Chapter 30 Montgomery GI Bill benefits. I was surprised by this and led me to think of others who might be in the same situation or don't even know that they can do this while in BDCP. Now obviously I haven't been to OCS and am still on the breadline but just in case they don't start GI Bill once you go to OCS, ask your recruiter about this as you might want to pay it before you ship and not worry about it when you go active. On a side note, do note decline this deduction because there are some pretty promising revised GI Bill's on the horizon that have the high probability of becoming legislation in the coming year or two once the arguments are settled.

One more thing, keep up with your pay, especially in the beginning as things will most likely be jacked up. If you are not familiar with what you should be making and are curious as to what other pays the DOD offers, here is a good place to start. http://www.military.com/benefits/military-pay Everyone gets Basic pay, BAH and BAS. There are some lucky few of us who get CONUS Cola (basically the high cost areas of the country) or OCONUS Cola for you Hawaii and Alaska BDCP selects

If you don't do it in BDCP you WILL get briefed about it at OCS and can do it there. I signed up for it in BDCP, but I didn't keep track and didn't notice that deductions were not being taken. Regardless at OCS I filled out the paperwork again (thinking it was just redundant) and that took care of the problem.

Also chiming in to profess the greatness of TSP (Thrift Savings) as instructed by my father (who is retired). He harped me every chance he got reminding me to sign up for TSP as soon as I went active duty.

I've seen his LES(s) and the savings he made from his TSP investments (which are deducted by a percentile of your choosing out of your pay) were pretty intriguing, even only over a few short years.

You can sign up for this in myPay (there's a link for TSP). Highly recommended.

Yeah I was sure that they would take care of at OCS in one of many in-briefs about the military (getting bad memories of boot camp) but I figure I might as well do it in the two years on the breadline.
