FY2009 Marine Aviation Plan

Lots of answers can be found in this "gouge".

- "As a result of transitioning to the EA-18G, the Navy will sundown EA-6B aircrew training at VAQ-129, NAS Whidbey Island, by the middle of FY11." pg 3-6

- "Based upon the current aviation transition strategy, there will no longer be a requirement for USMC Naval Flight Officers (NFOs) after FY19." pg 3-6

- "Planned squadron transitions to the F-35B begin in FY12." pg 3-8 ... chuckle

- "Reserve aviators are augmenting VMFAT-101and VMAT-203 with ongoing planning to expand to other FRSs, where supportable." pg 3-9 ... good idea

- Tables on pg 3-11 thru 3-13 ... the tables provide a pretty good idea of the Corps pilot training requirements for all of its airframes over the next 8 yrs. If your a dork & not into trying to get laid, you could probably figure out your odds of selecting "jets".

that's as far as I got, already wasted enough of my life reading that much...

F-35 transition might be possible provided it is going to share some of technological advancement in the F-22. Seriously do I think it will happen, No.

So the current NFO's are just going to retire with their Aircraft assuming the Hornets
hold up that long.

Reserves to augment the RAGs?
How is the Reserve Helo manning looking like these days? For the rest of the ones still around, are they meeting their manning goals?
With just one Hornet Squadron left in the Reserves(VMFA 112), I am sure the overflows from 112 will not mind a Miramar gig. Airline industry is not doing too well afterall!!

Thanks for sharing.

Well this just sucks. Last one I saw (a while back) had the reserves transition to the devil's whirly bird in '17 and '18. Now it looks like ~'14 and ~'17... That means I could potentially have 6 years to get an additional 800 hours in the Phrog (I want to have 2K before transition). I guess it's doable, but not the easiest in the Reserves...

Is there any reason you want to have 2k? Personal goal?
What is your yearly average in the Reserves?
Do you do Dets?

I want to get the Boeing 2K certificate. That's why.

We have to get 100 hours per year, OPNAV rule and all. So really, I'd have to get another 200 hours in 6 years. Like I said, doable.

Do we do Dets? Jesus, when don't we do dets... Only our Dets are to Airshows...

There you go. Way to spend a drill weekend and get retirement points :D

Just airshows? Nice !

So what are they going to do with the NFOs after 2019? I'd guess they'd offer many of them an "early out" but I can't imagine they'd just screw over everyone who wanted to make a career out of the Marines.

There are always other assignments besides flying (staff, of course, but if UAVs make it big...). And some could possibly fly as there's exchange with Navy in TRACOM training Navy SNFOs or in squadrons/NSAWC just to name a few. So they would hardly show anyone the door.

they're going to lop an anchor off their wings, send them to meridian and kingsville and use SNA's to solve the problem.
