I got here to P'cola Nov. 1 and was told I would be classing up this coming Friday. Today I got a phone call from Flt. mgmt. and they said there was a new policy that went into effect today...all SNFOs were going to do IFS prior to classing up, so I have to report for IFS tomorrow. Son of a beach. If I hadn't taken leave to go to my cousin's wedding the weekend before Thanksgiving, I would have classed up then. Did anyone else get that phone call today?

Also, for anyone who's gone through IFS...what do you wear? Khakis or civvies since it's taught by civilians, right? Just sort of curious. Thanks.

Civvies. Its glorious, no uniforms at all. You phone muster while you're in it too. Enjoy the vacation.

Civies. Unless you're an Air Force stud, then you show up wearing cammies and get made fun of by the Navy and Marine guys as well as the civilian instructors.

Funny how things change. When I was going through IFS, SNFOs couldn't beg their way into IFS, now it is a requirement?

I already WAS on vacation. All I did was phone muster and then show up one day for a urinalysis that never came to fruition. Anyone else get hit with that? "Um, sir...there's a command-wide urinalysis today, you need to come in." So I drive across town, walk in, and I get, "Um, sir, we're so sorry, that was only for the instructors, not the students." I won't say if that was recent or some time in the past...because that would just be mean.

Well, I went to IFS brief this morning. Shortly after that I got a phone call and was told to forget about IFS; you're classing up on Friday. Go figure. I wonder how many times that will change between now and Friday.

Introductory Flight Syllabus or Screening. Used to be 25 hours of civilian instruction as a quick "Do you really want to do this" reality check for prospective pilots. Now they try to weed out the low hanging fruit. IFS costs the Navy about $6-7000, API and Primary are around $140,000. Big savings if they get you to quit or find out you really suck at flying while you're still in IFS. This is why the name changed from Syllabus to Screening.

Road Program, my husband got the same phone call yesterday. He's been out all day today trying to get his up chit for IFS, to see if he can start tomorrow. He was also at that urinalysis deal... gotta love the communication around here (or lack thereof).

This may sound bad, but I'm just glad I'm on the receiving end of this (mis)management and not on the dishing end. If I was ever that screwed up, I never would have gotten here in the first place. I am so far past the point of being upset by any of this, it's not funny...I'm like a happy little flower in a meadow. After the crap I've been through in the fleet, this is a welcome break...like watching a real, live version of the Three Stooges. It's comical to me.

What really made me laugh this morning at the brief was the choice of places to go...Eglin, Miracle Strip, or Pensacola. Well, when word got out that Eglin was the hardest program, all the hard charges signed up for that...long drive and no-cost TAD orders and all. You know what advantage that's going to give them over everyone else? Nothing...just a little introduction into stress and a lesson learned.

Well, at any rate, I'm back to starting API in two days and not doing IFS at all. Total cost to me? One trip onto base and an hour or so of my time. At least I had an excuse to go in and sign the leave chit I forgot to sign when I turned it in on Monday.

I heard that if you go to Eglin, you will get jets. My friend in A-Pool told me so.

There's no guarantee that you'll get jets. Your IFS stuff ins't even looked at for selection, unless its down to the wire between you and another guy for one spot cause your NSS score is really close. The only thing you might get from Eglin is finishing faster.
