Yesterday I was at the Sqrn drawing my gear for a weekend hop and there was a new 2nd Lt (still waiting on Fam-0) working the duty desk, so I indroduced myself. He looked a little older than the average stud so I figure he must be a Prior. Turns out he was a 53 Mech on the west coast. I continue to pick his brain about the west coast and what do you know, we were on the same deployment, on the same ship (USS Peleliu - 95-96)! We got to talking about the float and all the crazy stuff that happened.

If you've ever heard the term "It's a small Corps", well it's true. I'm always running into folks I've served with. And I haven't been in that long, someone like 46Driver, PhrogDriver or Frumby could probably tell ya some good stories. It's something to look forward to for some of you guys that are applying, or happen to be at TBS. Many years from now you'll run into your rack-mate from OCS, or someone from your fire-team at TBS or even your Form wingman from Primary. For example, the TBS CO was my Bn XO when he was a Major, my OCS Company Commander was a Phrog pilot on that same deployment I mentioned above, one of the Sgt's running the range at Quantico was from the Sniper Plt from my old unit, Towbubba (here on AW) - we were on 2 floats together (dif ships)...etc And I'm sure it'll happen till the day you die. Someday you'll be old and grey and still happen to find another old Marine that happened to be in the same unit or same place you were.

I've heard the USMC referred to as a "gun club", "largest Fraterity in the world", "brotherhood", "family", I've even heard us referred to as a "Cult" from some outsiders..... However you refer to it, you'll never regret the day you decided to join. Yeah there are some tough times, and you may loose some buds along the way....but if it was easy, everyone would be a Marine!

small corps

I know what you mean about "small Corps". While enlisted, I ran into a good friend from high school at "A" school in Pensacola. Then, while on deployment on the Truman I was standing in line talking to a friend about where I am from and someone overheard. He happened to be another friend from high school. That was pretty cool. If I had to be stuck on that ship for 6 months, at least I could hang out with someone familiar.

It's pretty strange how you run into people everywhere.

One of my best friends played H.S Lacrosse with me and he enlisted after H.S. While playing Lacrosse in Okinawa, another kid a year younger from us who also joined the Corps stepped on the same field, now wearing a Marines jersey instead of Midwood H.S. They did a whole article about it, small world, tiny Corps.

I'm going to be getting in to Quantico about the same time as my good friend from high school is going to be leaving. My little brother enlisted and is now with 1st Tank Btn out in 29, my best friend's fiance recently graduated from TBS, and was promptly assigned to 1st Tank Btn. Also, my good friend who is leaving TBS when I get to OCS this summer, happened to go to OCS with my best friend's fiance. A very small Corps it is.

Just thought I'd add to this post...

Today I was in book issue and a Maj was in there getting his book issue for one of the VT's (FITU). Just to waste time I asked him what he flew/coast and he said Harriers/west. So naturally I asked if he ever deployed on the USS Peleliu and he said he did at the same time I did. I 'marked for air' for this guy and he even remembered working with the 81's plt! Then I told him how I remembered a harrier doing a low-level over our 'pos' (Kuwait) early in the morning. He laughed and said that was him and he remembers it clearly, and also said he half expected someone there waiting for him when he landed, but I guess it wasn't that big a deal.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my meaningless story with y'all.....lol

Considering how small the Corps is... One of my good friends from college is a 2nd Lt. He is in Artillary and was stationed in San Diego up until a month ago. He emailed me and said that he was going to Iraq. I told him I would call, but his phone was disconnected a few days later. Any of you guys know how I can get in touch with him? To send him a letter or what not? Im not sure what unit he's in. 11th MEU I think he said. I dont remember. Any of you guys know how to keep in touch with him, let me know. Thanks - Reaper
