Hello,
I am just wondering how the Navy calculates GPA for OCS commisioning. I know in the AF they count incompletes and repeats against you. Can someone please give me a link or tell me exactly how the Navy does this?
Thanks

I've heard conflicting reports on this matter. Is this how the Navy did yours? Do you have any retakes or Withdraws?

Nope. Never had any retakes, withdrawals or anything, but this is the GPA they used. I highly doubt the Navy has time to look through your transcript and calculate your GPA to their liking. I had credit from APs which didn't contribute to my GPA and an online course which probably will, but the GPA that my school calculates is the one the Navy will use. The Navy's job isn't to calculate your GPA, it takes the GPA your school calculated and uses it accordingly. Hope that makes sense.

How different is your GPA by calculating it different ways?

At my school and a lot of other schools you can retake a course and that grade will replace your grade for the first attempt at the course. From what I understand, the Navy will recalculate your GPA to include the grade for your first attempt(s). Of course if you never had any retakes or Incompletes then they wouldn't have to recalculate it.

I thought as much. With the increase academic requirements for SWO OCS and such I doubt that there wouldn't be some scrutinizing of your transcripts. Even if it has nothing to do with seeing how you nailed that 3.5+ average, transcripts give good insight on the actual person and how they came to be in the world.

I know at Ohio State there's the "Freshman Forgiveness Rule". This might apply to your case.

Freshman Forgiveness

If you receive a D+, D, or E in a class during your freshman year (before you have earned 45 credit hours) you
may retake the course, and the first grade will be dropped from your cumulative point-hour ratio (the record of
the original grade will remain on your transcript). You may retake the course only once, and you must retake it
before you earn 90 hours. If you earn a worse grade the second time around, that grade counts, not the higher
grade, and if you earn an E in placed of a D or D+, you will lose credit for the course. You can use the
forgiveness rule for up to 15 credit hours. It is best to retake the course(s) as early as possible.

However your school treats retaking a class does not matter. All grades are factored in. There is a difference between "institutional" GPA which alot of people are talking about here, and "cumulative" GPA. The board looks at cumulative GPA, or the number of total quality points you've earned divided by the number of credit hours you've attempted (including repeat courses). So if you take a course and get an F the first time around and then retake it and recieve an A, they will average out to a C. I wish it were different because I've got some crummy grades from my academy days, but thats how it is.
