Hello all, I've been reading thousands of posts over the last week and a half or so, and finally joined a few days ago to the forums. Whenever I become interested in something, I always research to see if they have forums. I'm a self taught mechanic and work on my Subaru all through learning on the forums (didn't know what a socket wrench was 2 years ago). Well, it's time for you to hear another life story and put your suggestions and advice towards it! Over the past month or so I've become interested in the military, not really sure why, all of the sudden I just became very interested in joining up. Well, since then I've contacted various recruiter's and I've decided I want to join the Navy via the BDCP program. I have some serious motivation, and I'm not sure why I'm so driven to join the military all of the sudden, but I'm really working hard to make sure I have goals set to achieve so I can get accepted. I'm interested in Aviation, mostly because of my grandfather flying in the Air Force (Lieutenant Colonel) for 20+ years. I've flown once with an instructor, pretty much a fun run to see if I was going to enjoy it or not, and I definitely did, however I never pursued getting the PPL. Also have played almost every version of Flight Simulator, but that doesn't matter much, hah ;) .Here's some quick stats on myself:

-College Freshmen at Arizona State University (Mechanical Engineering Major)
-1st Semester so no GPA yet, looking between 3.25 and 3.75 currently, just depends on if I can keep it up. I'm really working hard in this catagory because I've heard of the great amount of stress they put on GPA.
-Did not have good grades in HS (gpa of 2.9) mostly because of lack of motivation and not caring.
-Autocross my car once or twice a month, and volunteer a bit with that.
-Currently training for a half marathon, running 20 mile weeks currently. Also, cross training (biking) once a week, and just began lifting at the gym. I can easily do the run in the PRT and the situps, however I can only do about 15 pushups before stopping, so I'm working on that.

So, I contacted my officer recruiter near my University here, and he told me I should not begin applying until my Sophomore year, 2nd semester. I told him I had a mechanical engineering major, and that I had heard it would be best to begin around 2nd semester freshmen year, so that I can have the packet ready for submission the first day I'm allowed to. What do you guys suggest about this? I would like to get it sent away pretty much the first day I can, so that if I don't get accepted I can resubmit at least one or two more times before being out of college. So, should I like practically tell the Lieutenant that I'd really really want to start everything in January or February, or should I try to find a different recruiter, or stick it out til Sophomore Year 2nd semester? I don't need the money, my parents saved up their entire lives to pay for my college education wherever I wanted to go. I'm originally from Greenville, SC and moved out here to Tempe, AZ to start my college education. I'm not a spoiled brat either though, as both my parents came from military parents; they weren't just going to give me whatever I wanted. I worked 40 hour weeks at a local movie theatre the past 2 summers, and worked 25 to 30 hour weeks during the school year there. I will be going back there to work during Christmas break and at least this upcoming summer. I was promoted at that job and was one of four or five "leads" of the concessions. So anyways, any other hints, tips, and advice would be great, and hope everyone gives me a warm welcome to the forums! I'll be that invisible bug that reads a lot for the first few months, then will start posting some (after this thread of course, heh).

Yes, we just descended below 100 degrees, cool indeed.

Hah. I was very surprised yesturday at how cool it was at night. I ran at about 8 for 8 miles and it felt great out, I think I actually might been a little chilly at the beginning of the run!

Welcome to AW!

You have a really long post, what again do you want to know?

HAH. Practically if I should realy push the recruiter to let me start getting everything to get at the beginning of the next semester, or waiting it out a year, or finding another recruiter, etc.

Do you know what regulations/instructions govern your situation? I don't, but if they say you can start now, by all means go for it.

You get three years in the program with a technical degree. Start now. Tell the LT you want to start now. Get the package done and then submit it at the end of your Freshman year after you have 30 hours and a GPA. GPA is huge, work hard.

Great advice, exactly what I was looking for. And I realize GPA is huge, I'm making sure I'm doing my best plus some in every class, just hope that will be enough!

One last question. I'm going to start everything in January if I still think this is for me, that will give me time to think things over and push my start a little closer to when I can actually apply. Anyways, do you guys suggest I go and see my private pediatric pulmonologist that I went to as a child to clear me for my childhood asthma, or should I wait til MEPS?

I know squat about your situation, so I'll just parrot what I hear around here - apply early, apply often. If there's anything you can do now, do it. Your recruiter will probably appreciate the effort, and you'll spend less time dicking around once the time comes.
