Ground School

As a newbie, I would first like to say hello to everyone on the board. I have been visiting the board for weeks now and have been astounded by all of the information presented. Thank you everyone for your in-depth posts.

My question could be put in a few places but I decided to place it here because I plan on applying for BDCP in a couple months once I feel like my studying for the ASTB is where it needs to be. My question is regarding flight ground school. Would doing ground school and doing well on the FAA Knowledge Test for PPL score me any points with my application for SNA/SNFO without any flight hours or a PPL? Also, how much would doing ground school help me out on the Aviation and Nautical Information section of the ASTB?

No for the knowledge test. It doesn't mean shit except for passing before your checkride.

No for ground school.

Ground school would help seeing as the test is called Aviation Selection Test Battery. I only had one question on my test about nautical stuff and it was about a gong bouy.

I purposefully got all the nautical question wrong when i took the ASTB. Figured that it would show there was no fucking way I could be a SWO, and they would have to give me 1390. Hey it worked, and it made sense in my mind.....:D

Thank you guys. I believe I will pretty competitive for both getting pro reced for the SNA and/or SNFO community as well as BDCP without a PPL but I saw on this one Navy OCS Gouge that it helps. (http://heathalvarez.com/hobbies/ocs.html) Given my time frame and lack of available cash, getting the PPL is not an option so I guess I will forget the ground school idea.

Another question regarding becoming an aviator and BDCP. Is it suggested to get letters of recommendation from navy officers in your community? And if you don't know any should you attempt to get an interview or just leave it be? Thanks again fellas.

Get LORs from people who know you well (and care enough to give you a LOR worth sending in). Military officers (active and ret.) coaches, professors, anybody that has been an authority figure and knows you well enough to give you a good LOR.

Speaking for myself the only military officer I had was an Army Lt. Col. (ret.) who is also the head of the aviation department at my school. I didn't have a single Navy LOR.

I've been told that you don't necessarily need to have complete a PPL. Just having a few lessons/hours under your belt can help quite a bit. I plan on going that route myself.
