Been looking into purchasing a rifle of some kind, any suggestions? It'll be more for target shooting, as I enjoy that and there aren't many close places to go hunting where I live. Also, who else makes M1911's? I've looked at Kimbers and I like what I see, but I'm more into no-frills, exact duplicates of or real honest-to-God Brownings. Thanks for the advice. :icon_smil

Target shooting...maybe a nice high quality 10/22 variation (graphite barrel, titanium internals, etc.) would be lots of fun and won't hurt your pocket book. The top one in the pic is a 10/22 in .22 magnum...very accurate, even out to 100yards and pretty easy to build if you have minimal mechanical skills. If you are looking for a centerfire rifle, same can be said for a Savage....they are relatively inexpensive and shot rather well.

I share your like/love for Kimbers and have a really nice polymer target. If I were looking for a no frills .45 to play around with, I would start with a Colt Gov't model or Officers model. http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?item=35074240

How much money are you looking to spend??

I have a Savage Model 111FXP3 .30-06 rifle. Got it in late March/early April, and its been great so far. If I remember correctly, it was about $375.

For a 1911, I'd look at Springfield. They have their "GI" series, which are very affordable compared to alot of others. About $450-ish for black, $500-ish for stainless, locally. I want to get one, probably in stainless. :D

1911s are made by everyone and their brother. Springfield, Colt, Para Ordnance, Auto Ordnance, Rock Island, Kimber, SIG, etc. etc.

As for a rifle, do you want bolt action, semi-auto, etc etc? A Ruger 10/22 is a great start. You can modify them to your hearts content and they can be real tack drivers. I'd also suggest looking at AR-15s. They are the most commonly used target rifle in competitions today (discounting high-power). Can be made VERY accurate, though price will be a factor.

Well, the only problem I have is owning anything labeled as an "assault weapon." Since I am not yet eighteen, I can't own, fire, or even touch one of these "assault weapons" as stated by California law. So Bushmasters, AR-15s, etc. are out of the running. :icon_rage

Keltec SU-16. It was actually one of the few succesfully built "nuetered" guns to come over during the Ban. It wont win any beauty contests and Id question its reliability in a harsh enviroment, but it will allow you to shoot 5.56mm out of a stable and pretty well built platform while you plan your escape from the Republic of Kalifornia. It is a bit on the expensive side, and a little harder to find.... though Id imagine thats any rifle out where your at.

Just checked out Springfield's website. I like the selection. Also, they have M14 and M1 Garands for sale which is cool. Probably won't buy a pistol until I'm at least out of college so I got some time to go, but a rifle is definitely easier to come by. Thx for the suggestion Lawman, looks like a BAR. Not all rifles are hard to come by, though. It's pretty easy to find a bolt-action rifle in .30-06 or below.

Cant buy a pistol till you're 21, so if you're under, a pistol is out of the running anyway.

Springfield has had QA issues with their M1As... and Fulton makes a better M1A/M14 for not too much more. As far as Garands, get one from the CMP ( www.odcmp.com ) Even if you have to replace the barrel and stock, it will still be cheaper than a new one from SA.

But, if you've never been a shooter, buy something like a 10/22 and learn first. It's a lot cheaper to learn with 22LR than larger centerfire rounds.

Forgot you were from California. Forget AR-15s all together then. You can't own them, period. Unless you had it registered prior to a certain year... no transfering, no grandfathering. My advice, get out of occupied territory.

With that said, go the Ruger 10/22 route. A base model at Walmart costs about $170. Start with that, learn to shoot correctly, and when you feel the need to expand, you can accessorize the CRAP out of it. Barrels, stocks, fire control, triggers, bolts, optics, etc. Great platform.

Thanks so much for the advice. It's not that i don't know how to shoot or have never shot before, but it's always been with someone else's rifle, and I just want to get my own. Just came across my grandfather's old hunting rifles and I think I might clean those up and use them, but the Ruger sounds nice. I was thinking about getting a .22 anyways.

Squeeze- What exactly are QA issues? I'm not hugely knowledgeable on guns, just love to shoot them.

Fly- Been waiting to get out of occupied territory for years now. I got one more year of high school and then I'm gone, to colleges in 2nd Amendment friendly zones.

Maybe not....I keep all my good stuff on the ranch in Nevada...I 'thought' someone else posted the following here: (Can't hurt to call the number to find out for sure)

If you are permanently assigned to duty to a military assignment in California you may request to bring your weapons here. You have to be active duty so this doesn't apply to reservist and you have to be permanently stationed here - orders in hand so TDY/TAD assignments don't count. You can bring in as many semi-automatic weapons as you care to - there is no limit. It applies to all branches of the military including the Coast Guard.

The permit is issued for the purpose of personal possession and/or transportation of the permitted assault weapons under the conditions of penal code section 12285 (c) while permanently stationed in the state of California for active military duty. This does not apply to California citizens or California native military members. You have to be 18 years old.

The permit may be renewed annually for free. A $25 late fee applies if you fail to follow thru on the reminder sent to you 60 days prior to the date of the expiration.

The request has the following information on it:

Applicants military rank
Full Name
Mailing Address
Telephone Number
Branch of Service
Name and Address of Military Assignment
Make, model, and serial number of the Assault Weapons
Applicants Signature
$73.00 fee
Two Completed ten-print Fingerprint Cards
A Copy of the Permanent Change of Station Orders

The permit itself is a 8x11 sheet of paper with the military members rank, name, address and details of each firearm. My number was very low so this permit process isn't very well known. I also understand that the base itself is federal property and therefore falls under federal jurisdiction - don't bring your weapons on base without permission and if you've got them on the base - don't bring them off without permission. The only California regulations that I'm aware that apply to military members on base are pollution ones - smog etc.

I posted that. It won't apply to him since he cames from California. Only applies to those not native to CA.

Btw, after 3 months of sitting on my desk in complete laziness, I finally mailed in my Florida CCW application.

Go with the .22 for a first rifle. Whoever said Ruger 10/22 gave you good advice. You can move up later when you learn more and decide where your interests in firearms lies. The first .30-06 I took to the range left an impression on me --- sore shoulder for 4-5 days after putting 60-70 rounds downrange. That's not how you want to start, and it's too expensive for a new guy --- unless your parents are wealthy.
