i was doing a lot of cross country running till june when i had open heart surgury to replace an aorta. got one from a pig (oink). won't be able to start running for another month or two but have been doing some relatively rough terain hiking for the past month or so.
got to thinking about a hand held gps.
what i'd like is a recommendation from some of the recent TBS grads. i assume you used them for land nav.
or maybe somebody would like to part with one cheap.

Flaps, what sort of sidebag setup is that on your Bonneville?

I have two Bonnevilles myself.

The riding one:

The Barking One:

Had a Thruxton of the barking variety as well. Probably name the next dog Speed Triple or Rocket.

Pretty much can't go wrong with the Garmin eTrex. Easily fits in a cargo pocket, good preloaded maps, and works in both MGRS and lat/long.

Better than the standard military issue DAGR in pretty much every way with the exception of signal security, and I doubt you're worried about that these days.

I had a Garmin GPSMap series for a long time; my dad still uses it on his boat. Sturdy and waterproof. Recommend you get one that has a mini/micro SD card capability. Lets you expand the unit's memory to keep up with updated maps. Plus, at least some units, you can use it to drive to the trailhead, then swap in a topo card for the hike.

Garmin 60CSx. Best hand held GPS I've used. It's got colored map capability, a micro SD card you can load with all the map data you want, WAAS, and a simple user interface.

It's was reviewed as having the best antenna out there. I've successfully used it inside helos, jets, and MRAPs reliably.

BladeTech makes a nice hard plastic case for it with MOLLE straps too.

re: "Flaps, what sort of sidebag setup is that on your Bonneville?"

hi m.b.
they're just two surplus 20mm ammo bags i got from some outfit on the 'net. i hate using off the shelf stuff. i cut down some plastic milk crates and stuck them inside to hold the shape.

very happy with the triumph, by the way. most bike pubs are of the opinion that triumph has taken the 'quality' from bmw over the last few years.

Concur on the Garmin 60 series. Used one for the last 8 or so years and love it. I presume the latest models do have removable media which would eliminate the need to hook it up to your laptop to change maps.

Garmin 60CSx.

This.

I own/have owned An eTrex, a Magellan, Delorme, and two other Garmins including the Colorado. I'm on my second 60CSX. It's rugged, accurate, and once it locks a satellite, it doesn't let go, even under heavy tree cover. Data entry is easy and it syncs up with the computer like a dream.

If you're into geocaching, it manages waypoints and cache data very nicely as well.

Edit: Flaps, I removed the cartoon because you can't post anything theat is copyrighted. You can post links to it, but not the actual item. HAL Pilot,

Was gonna 2nd/3rd/4th the 60Csx. Have used them in helo in the backcountry spraying, and in Uganda for keeping track of where I was. I still use mine a lot. Problem with the roads is it doesn't always take the best routes. Perhaps it needs a new database. For offroad its great. Got the computer cable and the auto charger.

I suppose you would be surprised to hear that GPS is not allowed for land nav events at TBS, just an old school compass. Though, as of 4 years ago, GPS was allowed for some of the later FEX's.

that' nice to know, pourts.
i stopped at TBS in june with another 5-68 classmate.
we talked to a few instructors and several male and female students.
there were more things that hadn't changed than had changed in 43 years.
even stopped in my old room in o bannon hall. same old cinder blocks and paint. :)
