Has BDCP disappeared?

A little background first: I enlisted in the USMC, got an honorable discharge. Now I've got 50 of 130 credits in Mechanical Engineering with a 3.01 GPA. Vector Calculus, Differential Equations, Physics, all the good stuff.

Now I'm interested in the BDCP because I'd like to just go finish school full time and get back to the good ole military life. Ahem.. while making some money in the process.

The local recruiting station had no info on the BDCP or NUPOC or any program where I don't have to enlist first, and told me "You just get picked up for it from nuke school." Well seeing as this isn't my first time with a recruiter, my question is this...

-> Who do I have to ambush to apply for BDCP damnit? <-

P.S. Any advice on what would make me competitive for BDCP?

There are several members on AW who will tell you that BDCP is still well alive. Did you talk to an enlisted recruiter or an officer recruiter?

I talked to an enlisted recruiter. There was no officer recruiter in the station, and the local Officer Recruiter line in NY wasn't answering. Long story short, eventually the PO said he had an officer recruiter calling around to find out about it.

I figure if the officer recruiter doesn't know about it, it's gonna be a long road.

Is BDCP some obscure program? I know when I asked about NROTC the forms and pamphlets piled right up.

P.S. Can BDCP lead to comissioning as a Nuclear Officer or is that field specifically from NUPOC?

Kinda, you just have to ask an officer recruiter in person about it. I was kept in the dark about it until I was a junior.

NUPOC is the BDCP equivalent of a nuke program.

From what I have heard NUPOC comes and goes a bit more frequently than BDCP. BDCP being a bit more established.

We have an LT here that commissioned through NUPOC he got picked up for it, and the next semester they had stopped the program.

He said that NUPOC gets activated when they cant pull enough Nukes from USNA, NROTC, and already graduated OCSers.

There's your problem. Nothing wrong with enlisted recruiters, but chances are they may not know about the more obscure officer programs like BDCP. Keep calling the officer recruiter and if they don't answer after a few tries, then call the next closest one. Sometimes it took a few days for my recruiter to get back to me. Be patient, but talk to an OFFICER recruiter.

Good luck.

NYC O Recruiter: 1-212-385-4450

I didn't go through the NYC O Recruiter, but I did take the ASTB there.

Or if you're upstate, I don't know if they're still here but: 1-716-551-5862

Either one should at least get you a number for your local recruiter.

I am having a fit right now you want NUKE or CEC. are you within 30 months of graduation if so and your not too old you have a great chance at selection hell call the officer recruiter for that NRD oh here is her number on your PM screen and she will hook you up for NUPOC all the info you want.

It looks like others have already provided contact info for officer recruiters in NYC, but if you still need it PM me. I'm currently working w/ one in NY and he's been top notch throughout the process.

I believe the number posted above is one of the main office phones that isn't always answered. I have the recruiter's cell # and direct line if you would like that as well, just let me know.

First part...I said this before, and no one's corrected me so I'm guessing I'm right (my recruiter told me this): You can't go BDCP if you are pulling G.I. Bill benefits. That's my understanding.

As far as being competitive, there's a lot of information on here, but they look for a good GPA, good ASTB score, and definitely an all-around candidate (i.e. not just a bookworm) that is involved in extra-curriculars or SOMETHING that shows the side of you that is outside of the classroom. Being prior enlisted, you should definitely have some opportunities to show that side of you.

Guy just got picked up here in Boise who was prior Air Force, I think he was actually still in Iraq when the board went. Should check up on him...

Anyways, yeah, I'm SNFO just got picked up this winter. It's definitely around and a GREAT program. But they won't touch you until you're within four semesters of graduation. (might be six if you're a technical degree)

I have a 3.25GPA 56/7/7/7 on my ASTB and have been active in music on campus (used to be a music major so I play in the jazz band). Oh forgot to mention I'm an Accounting major. So hey if I could get picked up I think anyone who wants it bad enough can.

Like it's been said before in this thread definitely talk to an Officer Recruiter in person. Aviation is getting more selective as we get into spring (holy cow they were accepting everyone with a pulse it seemed in October/November). But Nukes are hurting a hear, lots of slots available! (Oh, Supply as well)

EDIT: Almost forgot, there's a sheet the recruiters have with info on what is being considered "competitive" lately from the boards and who's getting selected. Ask and maybe they'll show you if they're being nice lol.

I know someone who was on BDCP and pulling GI Bill benefits. Since BDCP doesn't pay directly for college, you can get both. Unless they changed this.
