The other part of the surge that most people miss is the way the troops are fighting. Rather than spending most of their time on the super-bases, they are out living with the locals. This allows them to breed trust and not have the sh-theads cut the locals heads off when our patrols leave an area for days, week, etc. I saw a significant change between 2006 and 2008 in the number of friendlies on the roads while flying. The other significant change between 2006 to 2008 -- a lot less safires. One action certainly drove the other.
