Can an officer become and aerial gunner or is it only for enlisted?

Does the air force and navy both have aerial gunner jobs?

And how easy /difficult is it to obtain a spot as an aerial gunner?

Sorry for all of the questions and I couldn't find a good forum to ask this question for... I want to fly but I'm not sure I am smart enough to handle pilot/NFO training. Thanks

If you are a maintenance officer in a marine helicopter squadron they will allow it sometimes, but only if the squadron is short on AO's. It isn't a primary job for an officer to pick at TBS or anything. That's all I know about the Marines. Maybe somebody else knows about the Navy.

Definately an aircrewman (enlisted) job in Navy and Marine Corps helos. The Air Force has a few spec ops helos with enlisted gunners. The AC-130 gunship is the only fixed wing asset that I can think of with a gunner. In this case, the actual gun operator (video game player) is enlisted, but there is an NFO type who oversees the targeting, etc.

Also worth noting, the gunner in the front of a Marine Corps Cobra is a qualified pilot.
