Heading to Vance AFB

Thank God for Kidney Stone Medical Waivers
I'm reporting to Vance for Primary on 26 AUG. After talking to Housing there and finding out they have a 9-12 month wait list I'm wondering what areas there I should look around to rent a home or apartment. Any advice?

About to start Tac phase in the Herc.
I lived in Edgewood Arms. It was pretty nice. Sunridge right off base is pretty nice except the landlord is a serious drunk.

places to stay

Winchster West, Sundrige Estates, and Indian Oaks seem to be the most popular (also the closest to base). Their are some really nice houses out to the north, but, they make for quite a drive.. which sucks with a 0515 showtimes on day 3 of the 15 day program. The BOQ list can change, so, keep an eye on that.. it is really quite nice living on base.

i live in indian oaks, and it is not cool. I was spoiled in PCola and this is a 180 from it. Call me spoiled, but I think air conditioning is a necessity when the daily temp gets over 100. Here at Indian Oaks, they seem to feel differently. While they will always respond to your cries for maintience within a day, that does not garuentee it will fix the problem. Got here in december, and of course the heat went out, got fixed, went out, got fixed, you know the rest. I could also do without my neighbors throwing their trash bags outside the front door of my building, and under my patio. The stuff here just falls apart.

If I could do it over again, I would live on base. It seems the cops hide at all the choke points leading to base waiting to strike all the military guys. I was hoping the BRAC would close this place down so their famlies would starve. Sunridge is the only place I have seen that looks decent.

Yeah, if I couldnt live on base, Id prolly do Sunridge. Just cause its super close, and the cops dont usually hang around there. They do north towards Garriot though.

hey BOMBS,

how do you like it there? I've heard a lot of harsh stuff about Vance, but is it really that bad? the 12 hr days start at 6? dont all of the single guys have to stay in the Q?

If you like to fly planes then this is your place. I've met a few people who have come here and said that they had more fun flying the tweet than any of the other aircraft in their careers. If you have a choice between the tweet and the t-6, I strongly reccomend the tweet. They've been flying it for 50 years, you'd figure that they've got it down by now. If you want to sit in alot more sims than your tweet friends, feel free to ask for the texan. Of course the downside is the time outside the cockpit. The town is horrible, the best restruant is 10 miles away in the next town and it is only open 3 days a week. Last night at WallMart someone told me to mind my own business for simply looking in their direction...a few people here seem to be jealous, and you will see why when you arrive.

The 12 hour a day thing does exist, but it isn't quite what it might sound like. You don't sit at attention for 12 hours a day studying. You fly (about 3-4 hours from brief to debrief), sim (about the same), have ground school lectures, and other "events" to attend to during your day, plus the "formal brief" which can last an hour. Once you get into the swing of things, you won't even have the time to sit around in the flight room to study up for your next event because you'll be doing three events a day. Another thing that helps is that your classmates have no choice but to help one another, so you learn from everyone's mistakes. The IPs, for the most part, are amazing, and will do anything they can to help you suceede. Keep in mind that while you're on formal release, you won't always be there 12 hours. Its up to the flight commander to release you for the day, and the IPs in the flight are usually there longer than you are, so they know that you can't do 12 on 12 off forever.

If you're single, you will live in the Q unless they are out of space. Its soley a crap shoot and you won't know till you know. I know you may want to live off base for any number of reasons, but unless you need to run a meth lab (of which there are tons of in this town), you should really consider living on base.

Thanks Everyone for all the info. I just called housing today to see if they had space for my wife, pet, and I, only to find out that they have a 9-12 month waitlist (the guy on the other end just laughed as he asked me if I wanted to put my name down) WTF, they only have four, two bedroom homes there apparently. From there, I called the JSUPT number and they sent me a list of close to thirty off base homes for rent that seem pretty nice.

BOMBS...

that's a negative! no meth lab aspirations here. I got a C in chemistry. I know that the mentality is work hard, play hard...but can you expect any of the latter while you're at Vance? I know the goal is to get your wings, but I'm looking for a way to unwind on the weekends too...you know. How's the nightlife...bars...etc? Should I take up bullriding to fit in? Oh, since they send you there for Primary and Intermediates...how long does that take to complete usually?

intermediates?

No idea what that is.

You will be given a graduation date from phase two the day you show up. It will be approx. 6 months. Then, unless you stay for advanced and fly the T-1 (E - 6 only), you will come back to the navy.

You will also have to re-do something that is kinda like API, only, alot less work and no swimming. Thats part of the 6 months though.

As for the night life.. thats a big non exhistant. As for time for a night life.. during the first six weeks of ground school, plenty of time.. and then.. the next three months or so (until around midphase (first checkride) dont count on it.

My advice, go to Stillwater and OKC as much as possible before you hit the flight line.

NavyVance,

intermediates = the phase after Primary...although they're the usually combined though...

E-6's sound great! sign me up. How often do you see the opportunity to get that community? When it's available...is it usually pretty popular?

the flying portion of the program is 4 to 5 months and the ground school portion is 6 weeks. No telling how long you will have to sit around and wait to start up though.

I know it is hard to comprehend, but you will understand when you drive 2 hours through the middle of nowhere to get here passing sheriffs trying to round up the stray cattle that have wondered onto the road. Make sure you buy your beer on base because the stuff they sell in town has a reduced alcohol content. The "night life" here tastes alot like that.

ocjams.. let me rephrase. Vance is Primary.. not.. "intermediates"... Intermediate.. Is being phased out for the most part as far as I know.. and.. even when it did exhist.. it was never in a primary aircraft (T-34, T-37, etc.)
