Recently, I went to get my DODMERB physical for the service academies. They found a heart murmur and requested that I get an echocardiogram. I went to get this and they said that I have mitral valve prolapse. They said I have a whiff of mitral insufficiency and a trace of tricuspid insufficiency. How will this affect my chances of receiving an appointment to the Air Force Academy or the Naval Academy? How will this affect my chances of becoming a fighter pilot or any other pilot for the military? Also, is there any chance of getting a waiver for this to go to the academy or to be a fighter pilot? Thanks.

one other thing...

My heart rate is completely normal and so is my blood pressure. Will this have any positive effects on receiving a waiver? My dream is to become a fighter pilot and I really don't want to be disqualified for something like this, especially when I'm physically fit and play sports consistently. Also, I lift weights a lot and have absolutely no symptoms. Any thoughts? Thanks for everybody's time.

i had a slight murmur on my dodmerb physical too... go to a specialist- someone you trust and have them give you a second echocardiogram. if the specialist says you are good to go then you can send that recommendation in and they'll clear you. that's what happened in my case.. dunno if it's the same thing though. good luck.

Well, I'm trying to get a second echocardiogram. Basically your saying to maybe get a letter from one of the cardiologists saying I'm capable of performing military activies to any extent? What kind of specialist, just another cardiologist or what?

yeah a civilian cardiologist saying something to the extent that your condition is totally "normal" and that you are totally qualified.

You could probably get the civilian to identify it as within the Navy's waiver limits...as in trivial/no regurgitation. You can get the exact waiver conditions from NAMIs website, as well as a lot of other things.

Hey d nordman,

Did you get everything worked out with the echocardiogram? I just recently had a physical and I guess something funky came out on the reading from the EKG, but everything else was okay (BP, pulse, etc). So now I have to go to another military hospital and have a second test done. Did you go to a civilian doctor? And how did everything turn out?
