Hey guys. Me and my friend were talking today in weight lifting, and somehow the convo came about to the Marines (we both want to be pilots), and he was telling me how after his first tour as a pilot, he would try out for Force Recon, to change things up. Is that possible? Just wondering.

I don't think the Marines would be too keen on spending a few million on 3 years of flight training only to have him do only one tour.

Needs of the Corps.... anything's possible. I wouldn't count on it. I have heard of a guy going Infantry->Aviation as an officer, but that was long enough ago that he was flying Rhinos.

HE could however be the Force Recon air officer. You can do all the REcon stuff you want but your primary job is to schedule air support for them and train them how to control it.

I have a very good friend who is at First Force as the AirO right now and really likes it.

I have wondered if air officers were used by FR. So is this just a training role or are they downrange calling in air suppot with them? Either way still seems like a sweet job.

Yes to all the above. If they are doing the Recon role he isnt out there. A direct action hit he goes with them. One story he told was in Ramadi, they did a DA hit he went in with the team then up to the roof for better comms the Recon bubbas went to antother house wihtout letting him know so he went back down and the Iraqis living there thought all the Marines were gone until this 6' 3" dude with lots of radios and a rifle comes walking through their living room.

You get the option based on availability and world situation. MY friend was too busy doing real missions to get either school.

ANGLICO, or Air and Naval Gunfire Liason Officer, might be more of a possibility for someone with that mindset.
