I did not fare too well on the OAR portion of the ASTB. I have an excellent package besides the test but I feel like nothing is as important as the test. My OSO told me to take it again, but he said that no one he has ever worked with ever did better on the second or third time. I went on and studied all of the gouges, which helped a lot. Does anyone know of anything that could help with the math portion of the tests or of some kind of prep course. I am strongly considering becoming an officer in the Coast Guard (which I have already been accepted into OCS) and the trnsferring into the Navy after my three years is that even possible? Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

As far as the ASTB is concerned, there is a study guide to be found at Barnes and Noble bookstores. At least, that's where I found mine. You may already have it. It's got a breakdown of each part of the exam and even practice exams you can take. A great study aid.

Secondly, about taking it more than once. Don't worry about what anyone else says they've heard. I took the exam twice and I still wear gold wings. Just study hard, practice as much as you can, and the most important thing to remember.... RELAX!!!
If you worry about it, you'll make a silly mistake. That even transfers over to when you get to flight school.

Can't help you on the transistion from CG to Navy.... someone else will have to field that one.

good luck on your next try. Let us know how you do!!

I just spoke with my OSO and he told me that they loweredthw competitive score of the OAR to 48 instead of 58? is this true?

58 is pretty darn good. I got a pro-rec with a 56, and I've heard anything above 50 is pretty solid. It varies, though.

As far as study guides, there are the books you can get. You might consider getting a SAT tutor, since the math is similar on that test. I didn't do that, so I can't say it works or not, but just tossing that out there.

Standard deviation aside, on a bell curve distribution, a score of 50 would actually mean you're perfectly average in your score. Understandable, things change and change frequently, but Naval Aviation is always pretty competitive. I would say you can certainly get accepted with an OAR in the 50's (I know plenty of people with scores in the 50's) but when I was applying, my recruiter told me I wouldn't even be competetive with less than 65. So put your best foot forward and try to get over 60 and you should be very competitive. I got a 63 and 8/8/8 and I feel confident that those scores made my package THAT much better. Best of luck

I increased my OAR from 44 to 51 (got pro-rec swo)so it is possible, in fact I dont see why it isn't recommended to take again (depending on scores of course) since you now know how the test is and there are really no unknowns to worry about. What killed your score? For me it was the time. I ran out and had to guess, plus I used the Cliffs book. Maybe start timing yourself and use the ARCO book. Also, why not take the coast guard commission? I would have shot for that too but im an old man it seems.

The first time I took the test without studying, I got a 4/5/5 - 46. I studied hard for like 3-4 weeks before my retake, and the second time I got a 5/7/6-50. I just got Pro-Rec SNA. The rest of my package was pretty strong.

People say this on here all the time and its true... Remember, all the scores you see on this website are not a reflection of the average scores that are accepted. People are accepted with much lower scores than these, its just that people don't post them for all to see. But yeah, study hard and you will improve your scores.
