Where exactly is the best location for a married SNA with follow on orders to Whiting field? I've been map questing some locations and it seems as if the most central locations with respect to API and Whiting are Gulf breeze (Tiger Point) and NE P-cola (9 mile road). I've been checking out some rentals around Tiger Point golf course and 9 mile road. I would love to live towards the perdido key area but the drive is too long to Whiting. I've heard nothing but good things about Gulf breeze so I was wondering if it is worth the commute. Any advice or experience with these areas will be greatly appreciated. Also, are there any tolls living in Gulf breeze?

Sar, I'm in the same situation, my wife and I went ahead and got a place at Governor's Gate, that way she can be close to twon for work as well. According to Mapquest, its about a 36 minute drive to NASP, and a 39 Minute Drive to NASWF. There are also a few other threads discussing this that you might want to search through for some other good ideas.

You will not want Gulf Breeze if you are going to be at Whiting, it's not a short drive. Anything around 10 is about midway between the two fields. Most of my married API classmates lived up closer to Whiting and commuted down from Pace etc. When you are in Primary will have a lot more long days then you will at API/A-pool in Pensacola. I recommend biting the bullet and having a long commute to API...you will thank me when you are in the sims until late at night and don't have a 40+ minute drive home when you are done.

This guy has got it right. I lived in Milton, did the long drive to API (sucked) but it was made up for ten fold in primary. You have no idea how nice it was to have two sims and still be able to go home inbetween for lunch and a break.

If you need to be close to the city stuff maybe the whole Governors Gate thing is the way to go. Pace has all the major things you should need (WalMart, Target (w/ Starbucks :D), chain restruants, etc) if you decide to live in Milton or Pace. Its a bit of a drive to get into Pcola from the Whiting area. Pretty easy access to beaches (Pensacola Beach, not Perdido). I would recommend living in Pace as the best 'mid-point'. Living in the town of Milton was extremely convenient but I could have done without the southern Alabama gang-bangers and meth dealers. Its really hit and miss on the neighborhoods, so check them out in person (day and night). We got lucky, if we lived just few blocks away from where we did it would have been very hairy.

Plus, when you get the 5 or 530 am briefs (you'll probably show up between 4-430 at the squadron), being relatively close to base is nice. I really felt sorry for some guys I know who live in Pensacola with an hour or more commute, some told me they'd get up at 230 or 3 sometimes, compared to 330-4 for me.

And you never need to be at API before 730ish so even if you factor in a little more time for traffic you will never have a nasty wakeup call due to the drive to P-cola

My bad, yeah they still have those...with the exception of those 6 days early wakeups will not be necessary.

Bottom line, live by Whiting. API will seem like a big deal when you are in it, but it has very little effect on your selection/aviation carrear. Short drives to Primary will benifit you much more then short drives to API or 30 min commutes to both.
