How big an issue is debt?

I was curious as to how big a factor debt is when applying for BDCP or a commission in general. I was hospitalized and acquired a debt that I cannot pay. I don't qualify for any programs (Medicare, Carelink..) because of my prior military service and the VA can't help either. The hospital and I have failed to come to any agreement (ie payment plan) and I simply do not have the money (something to the tune of $15,000). I'm still trying to work something out with the hospital, but the failure to pay has already affected my credit. Exactly how much will this affect my chances of getting into an officer program?

I can't answer your question exactly, but I can tell you that part of your security clearance investigation includes a credit check and when you get to OCS you will have to fill out paper work stating how much debt you owe so that they can make sure you will be able to pay it on what you will make as an 2LT. An OSO could probably answer that for you better.

Been there, done that.
Desperado, I don't know what you were hospitalized for, but that alone can keep you out of OCS. Debt is an enormous factor in being able to get any sort of security clearance. My advice to you... find a way to pay down your debt. It will effect whatever you do in the future, in or out of the military. If you were prior enlisted, depending on your type of service, you may be eligible for assistance through some federally funded/related agencies. If you are not in a position to consolidate seek advice from a non-profit agency that may intervene on your behalf.
