How far did you go to take the ASTB?

I live in Charleston, SC on the navy base but my recruiter wants me to go to Columbia to take the ASTB. That's like a 100 mile drive, but that's the nearest officer recruiter office. Do you think I can ask to take the test here? I don't mind driving I guess, but if I can take it right down the street, i'd rather do that!

Maybe I'll give him a call later, just wanted to see if this was normal or not. :)

I had to walk like 1/4 mile... I took it while at the boat school. HOWEVER, the first time I took it (and failed), I had to drive 28 miles to the OSO in Hyattsville. You can ask to take the test there, but you're probably going to end up driving anyway.

Okay, the Nuke pipeline has one of their main areas out there by goose creek (NNPTC). I know they can administer it there as well. You would have to get in contact with the people who deal with officer accession programs and work something out.

Thanks for the responses. I'll call around and see what I can find out. I'll probably just make the drive and concentrate on studying though ;)

I'm living in Greenville, SC and have the same OSO as you. He told me that he could administer the ASTB at your home town, but if you take in in Columbia you get the results immediately after finishing the exam. If you take it away from Columbia it takes two to three weeks to get the results back. I just drove to Columbia, and it was a snap.

This seems as good a place as any for my first post on the forum...
I had to drive 210 miles to take the ASTB. One way. Part of that is just a function of being in Montana, you have to head to MEPS in Butte to take most tests other than the ASVAB, but at the same time it's pretty stupid to have MEPS there instead of Billings. If I'd been in eastern Montana, I'd probably have had to drive as much as 350 miles. My recruiter, by the way, is in Seattle :D
I'm not complaining though, when I finally got my scores (check my profile if you're interested) I was happy. It's taken forever, but my package was finally sent off last week; my fingers are crossed and my prayers are being said.

Oh wow, I didn't realize that. Ok, i'll just drive then!

it was about a 20 minute drive for me. I took it at the navy officer station. Ended up switching to Marines but that would have resulted in a only 45 minute drive. Get I got pretty lucky geographically

I only had to drive about 10 miles, but while I was there I met someone who had driven about 150 miles.

Smattles - I live in Columbia, SC, and just took the ASTB last week at the officer recruiting station. The test is a paper copy, and you have to wait a while for the scores to come back (I've been waiting over a week and a half for mine...).

Thanks for the info. Did you do anything else after you took the test? Just wondering if I need to bring anything.

Thanks.

Ironmanc - Did you take the ASTB for Navy or Marines? Mine was for the Marines and it was done on a computer.

Smattles1of2 - If you weren't talking about the ASTB for the Marines ignore my earlier post. I was talking about dealing with the OSO for the Marines in SC.

Drove 75 miles today to take it in Seattle at the Marine OSO. I don't think I could have been any better prepared, thanks to the help on this forum...

I'm going Navy.

After I took the test, I just went back home - but I only live about five miles away. I would suggest sitting with the LT and discussing the different communities with him, and ask questions about what you're interested in. He's an SWO, so he knows a lot about them. (Of course, if you are going marines and not navy, nevermind all that).
