This one has been thrown around between a few OSO's and not one of them can say for sure. I'm curious because I've been told that its three strikes and your out? Does anyone know for sure? Thanks
I am pretty sure they just came out with a new rule that you can only take the test 3 times in your entire life. No longer can you just retest, retest, retest.
Correct. You can only take the ASTB THREE (3) times in your lifetime. Old tests (Forms 1 & 2) are not counted in this lifetime limit. Only your last score counts.

Yes, you can take it three more times....the new limit is three times with the NEW tests (Forms 3/4/5). The old ones aren't counted in the lifetime limit. Remember that only the last test score counts.

Wait, so I took test 1 and 2 previously. You mean I can take test 3 three times now? I thought it was just 3 total tests including old tests?
question - I am going to meet with a Navy Officer Recruiter soon, and he mentioned I could take the ASTB so I could get a better idea if I'm on the right path towards aviation. Does this count towards the 3 times I can take the test, or is it only a "test for the test?" I forgot to ask him that yesterday, d'oh!
it counts. As far as I know, there isnt any ASTB pre-test.. My recruiter tried to pull the same thing on me. I just told him that I wanted to wait till I was ready for it.
Well I just burned my first one today. My recruiter told me that I should take one right away and study for the next one if I need it. Hopefully not bad advice. I don't think I'll need another one however, because that was way easier than I expected, I think I new the answer the just about every question right away. I was on ROTC scholarship for a year and I picked up some things in my Navy Science classes, so hopefully that will help. Now I get to worry.
I also heard from my recruiter that if you take it a second time, you have to wait 30 days before taking it again. For a third time, you have to wait 90 days from the time you took the second test.
Having somewhat recently gone through it, for me it was very similar to what jared G said with one small exception:
Take test 1
Take test 2 31 days after test 1
Take test 3 180 days after test 2
My package for service selection would have been due way past my potential third test (I only took it once) so I never found out if I could take it more than three times. Looks like you can't. And of course, the most recent test taken is the one that counts.
And to practice, just get one of those books...they probably have them in your local library...you can definitely buy one.
