How NJP's affect OCS boards

I am applying for SNA next month, and I have 2 NJP's in my past. I meet the requirements for eligibilty, but I am concerned how much that might affect my selection. I have a BBA 3.71 GPA, finished my SNA physical, submitted my paperwork for the clearance, EAWS, ESWS, passed aircrew school, JSOM (Jun), and JSOQ (2nd Quarter). I have had my nose clean since my last NJP in OCT 2004. My NJP before that was Jan 2003. MY XO (0-5) had told me it was not going to stop me from getting selected, but that other applicants who have clean records would potentially be selected over me. He told me to go for it, and that my past shouldn't stop me from applying. My career counselor says that it won't be a problem, I have talked to a class A recruiter and I was told I am still eligible. What do you guys think?
I would appreciate positive and beneficial advice to aid my application before I submit.

What is the harm in applying? I would venture that many prior Enlisted Officers have had brushes with the man in their past. What would stand out on your application is how you have performed since then (quals, etc), your evals and Interview boards. Being successful after being "off track" is a clear indication of having matured and developed as a Sailor.

The $64,000 question is: "what were the NJP's for?" If they were for stupidity or lack of maturity, then your accomplishments and achievements since then may be enough to prove you should get the nod for selection. If the NJP's involve smuggling illicit drugs or unnatural sexual acts with pilots & SWO's, well, you may have a bigger problem !

Hey man, put in for it. I worked with a guy who got an NJP for underage drinking, got busted down, 1/2 months pay, and the Captain really laid into him. He waited for the time limit for applying to be up, put in for STA-21 and got picked up first try. Like Hoover said, he told me he simply tried to work hard and show he learned from it. I think that's what really helped his application. Good luck.

If you really want to stand out in a positive way you should see if the CO (or CO's) who administered NJP would now be willing to give you a letter of recommendation based on your recent achievements and career desires. That shows core values straight up and would play very well in front of any board.
