I have decent ASTB scores but bad overall GPA. Not sure how to improve my application if needed.

Hello guys,

So I took the ASTB and these are my scores

OAR 52

PFAR 9

FOFAR 8

From my understanding these scores are not that bad. But the thing that has me worried is that my undergrad GPA is about a 2.47 on the quarter system. While I have a 3.7 GPA for my masters on the semester system. Both GPA averaged I think it puts me at around a 2.6. I know that the GPA disqualifies me from immediate selection. So I am worried that my GPA will keep me back from getting a pilot position.

Worst case I do not get selected I guess I can get an associate's degree to boost the GPA. Since a PhD and Masters do not have that many credits and both degrees would take to much time and I will not meet the age requirement at graduation.

I know that technically I can take the ASTB again. But I am wary about that since I do not like the risk of accidentally doing worse and losing the scores I have right now.

I know that I am getting ahead of myself since I still have to go through MEPS and no decision has been reached on my application. But do you have any advice on this specific situation?

Welcome to the forum. First and foremost, please take the 1-2 minutes to dive around and search the various threads - particularly the aviation board ones. The "new guy/gal" posts are a bit discouraged, otherwise these posts would pop every 5 minutes.

Good luck.

I’ll tell you that your ASTB scores pretty solid. As for your GPA, I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure for most programs, your masters GPA supersedes your undergraduate GPA.

As long as your masters is conferred.

Yeah that is the part that has me confused since I spoke with a recruiter before taking the ASTB. I explained the GPA situation and what I understood was that I should not worry about my undergrad GPA since I have the grad school GPA. Currently I am working with another recruiter and he told me that the GPAs need to be averaged.

He told me that the only way the masters GPA would supersede the undergrad GPA was if the program I was applying to required a masters as a minimum.

I kind of want to ask in a respectful way if we could see the official policy regarding the GPAs for SNA. Since having two different forms of information is a bit confusing. Also going through immediate selection if possible would make my life a lot easier.

Some of the PAs like supply, specifically state that the conferred masters GPA will supersede your undergrad.. however, we can take that with a grain of salt considering that’s what the supply PA states and not the aviation PA. They may not allow that, your OR would need to talk to the OCM for confirmation.

GPAs will be averaged, your ASTB is good, just apply and see.
