I might be Screwed

My situation is this: I've been working on my Air Contract application since November and the final item to complete it is my PFT. I've worked very hard to get where I needed to be, buy I may have shot myself in the foot by over training. I've gone from a mediocre PFT level ( about 90 sit-ups, 9-11 pull-ups, 26 minute run), to a pretty competitive level ( 100+ sit-ups, 19 pull-ups, and 22:30 run), but I've run into a problem. I've had severe calf cramps and shin splints for the last month or so, and to make it worse I'm just getting over a nasty flu that seemed to drain the chit out of me. I'm fairly certain that the pull-ups and sit-ups will be great, if not perfect, but I'm a bit nervous that I might bomb the run. My calf muscles are getting better but not fast enough, and my training is suffering because of it. My run time today was about 25 minutes, so I'm assuming I'm pretty much f##ked as far as my PFT goes unless a miracle occurs.

If I don't get in, I'll just keep applying until I do get in, but I would like to know if there is any hope at all for this OCS class in the event that I do bomb the PFT. I've heard of people being preselected for an OCS class following the one they actually applied for, and I was wondering how that works. On the bright side, I guess everything for my app to the next board will be complete aside from my PFT...:icon_roll

There is a lot of info on this kind of thing throughout this website. Search the word shin splints and you'll find what your looking for. I had a similar problem with them earlier this year. Basically, stop running and let your legs heal for a week or more. Injury can occur from over-training.

With your pullups and situps as high as yours, you'll still have a competitive PFT score. Though your run time may be temporarilly slow, the rest of your package seems pretty solid. Let your OSO know whats up, and take steps to curb the shin splints. I went into OCS with a PFT similar to yours and a very bad case of shin splints. The info obtained through this site allowed me to make it through OCS and drop my run time significantly. Do a search on shin splints, and follow the advice given. Good Luck.

After the board meets, you'll find out if you got selected. Those that don't get selected are sometimes 'pre-selected' for the next class. I found out about 3 weeks after being told I wasn't selected that I was pre-selected for the next class. Good luck!

I was having problems too right before my PFT. Just talk to your OSO, keep him in the loop. I had continuing sinus infections for 2 months that pretty much made breathing impossible let alone running with it plus my energy was shot. I just wanted to sleep like 15 hours a day. I talked to my OSO, told him what was up and he was like, we'll deal with it. My PFT was ok, not the best but hey I still had a good score. If you do ok on the other stuff a slightly slower run that you DON'T fall out of is still ok. But get those things healed before OCS or all of this work is for not.

What date are you applying for? Just curious.
