Looks like a lot of folks got lucky the guy failed.

The police are working on one theory – and at present it remains a theory - that the so-called “suicide-bomber” was attempting to attach bombs to the buses parked in the area when one of the a bomb detonated prematurely.

ON EDIT, it looks like some guy with mental problems, not a terrorist attack.

"Suicide Bomber" Outside of Oklahoma Stadium During Game Saturday Night
84,000 in Attendance; Evidence of Potential Homicide Bombing Mounts as More Than One Device Found
By Douglas J. Hagmann, Director

2 October 2005; 0545 a.m. EDT During the Oklahoma University and Kansas State Football game Saturday night, a large explosion occurred outside of the stadium packed with 84,000 football fans that was heard up to four miles from the stadium.

The blast happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. CDT on the South Oval, across the street from the Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, near the George Lynn Cross Botany-Microbiology building the oval's east side, and near an area where numerous busses to transport people from the stadium were parked.

A number of agencies were on-site, including Oklahoma University Police, the Norman, Oklahoma Police, the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, state medical examiner's office, as well as the FBI and Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

According to one local law enforcement official who spoke to the Northeast Intelligence Network at 3:45 a.m. EDT on the strict condition of anonymity, “other un-detonated explosive devices were found in the area cordoned off by police and federal officials.” The police are working on one theory – and at present it remains a theory - that the so-called “suicide-bomber” was attempting to attach bombs to the buses parked in the area when one of the a bomb detonated prematurely.

The gender, race and ethnic origin of the “suicide bomber” has yet to be publicly released, although authorities on-site believe they know the identity of the bomber. According to the officer who spoke to the Northeast Intelligence Network, officials are “not yet ruling out the involvement of others,” but declined to elaborate any further.

Initial report filed by Thomas B. Morrison, Northeast Intelligence Network Investigative Analyst on-site at the University of Oklahoma.

dont know what to think yet...way too early on this one to be coming to conclusions. This is very strange for me....being an OU alum. More thought to follow in due time.

Multiple explosive devices attached to buses doesnt seem to fit the traditional suicide bomber.

Hinrichs- does not sound Middle Eastern/Islamic.

Neither did John Walker Lindh.

That being said, too early and it's just a theory. Wait for more information.

Rest of the text from the Dallas paper since the link seems to be a subscribe thing.

Kind of interesting to read this info, which indicates a single bomb, and the other which speaks of a 'theory' that he was going to bomb several buses. Maybe 'theory' is media speak for "I wanna get some attention to what I write". It sure will be interesting to see how this plays out.

NORMAN, Okla. – A University of Oklahoma student who killed himself by detonating a bomb near the jam-packed Sooner football stadium apparently had a history of emotional problems, authorities said Sunday.
Federal and state agents identified the man as John Henry Hinrichs III, 21, an engineering major at OU.
"He clearly was a very bright student," Mr. Boren said, yet one who "had very serious personal problems that led to this tragic death."
Mr. Hinrichs' father, Joel Henry Hinrichs Jr., said he was very surprised to hear the news about his son.
"We exchanged e-mails on an irregular basis, several in the last month, and nothing seemed out the ordinary," the father told The Associated Press.
His son was a National Merit Scholar who graduated in May 2002 from Wasson High School in Colorado Springs, Colo., and began attending OU in the fall of that year with a major in mechanical engineering.
"He was a very intelligent, very private individual who somehow lost the confidence that his life would be a good one," the elder Hinrichs said. "Obviously, every parent believes their son is a good kid, and I certainly believed that about mine."
Mr. Boren said authorities told him there was no indication that anyone else was involved with Mr. Hinrichs – or that he attempted to enter the stadium, where the Sooners and Kansas State were playing Saturday night. More than 80,000 fans attended the game, and some heard and felt the explosion.
"At this point, we have no information that suggests that there is any additional threat posed by others related to this incident," said a joint statement from the FBI's Oklahoma chief, Salvador Hernandez; U.S. Attorney John Richter; and OU Police Chief Elizabeth Woolen.
Mr. Hinrichs detonated the bomb while sitting on a park bench outside Cross Hall, one of the university's science buildings, just west of the stadium.
Authorities initially feared another explosive device might be inside a backpack near the body. They deployed a robot and some mild explosives in an attempt to detonate the backpack but determined there were no explosives inside.
Early Sunday, law officers and school officials also evacuated four buildings in Mr. Hinrich's nearby university-owned housing complex, Parkview Apartments, to search for evidence, including perhaps more explosives.
The complex, about four blocks southeast of the football stadium, remained cordoned off Sunday afternoon as law officers combed the area.
The estimated 35 to 40 student residents were moved temporarily into Norman hotels, where they were expected to remain until at least today.
Mr. Boren suggested Mr. Hinrichs could have chosen the location – and the time – to ensure the most attention for his death – or because that area of campus is especially serene and picturesque.
"He has had what I would call emotional difficulties in the past," Mr. Boren said.
The area near the detonation site, just west of the football stadium, was pretty much back to normal Sunday afternoon. University officials were busy replacing shattered windows in Cross Hall.

Aircraft and guns are a means of delivery. Unless you crash the aircraft into something or whack someone with the gun, they aren't destroying anything.

That name and the combo of being in OK and an engineer...one has to wonder...
