ID Card Question..

I was wondering if I am eligible (moreso my spouse) to go to PSD to get my ID card once I have my orders to OCS. If I am sworn in, I would assume that I am "enlisted" in the US Navy. As far as pay goes, I know it doesn't begin until the day of the report date on the orders.. Shouldn't DEERS or the ID Card be active once I get orders though? Can some of you clarify this, as I asked my recruiter today and he wasn't sure?

Once you sign the documents, you are indeed enlisted in the Navy. However, you benefits don't start until your pay does (1st day of OCS). I'm sure your spouse can't get benefits until then either.

I know that doesn't exactly answer your question, but it is as much as I know. If it is possible, it is a good idea to get her into DEERS right away so that she is covered while you are at OCS. When you do get your orders, you should be able to find out who your class officer and class chief are. Your class chief should be happy to help you with these kind of things. You can also try PSD. You are not a normal situation, however, so they might not be able to give you a good answer.

Are you BDCP or straight OCS? If you're BDCP you'll be eligible for an ID immediately, as will your wife. Otherwise I think you'll have to wait until you report to OCS for your ID. You should be able to add your wife to DEERS while at OCS in the event that you can't do it beforehand.

I asked this same question last week, I found out that the reason your wife won't be able to get an I.D card is because you are technically in "Reserve" status until you check in @ OCS, after that you'll become "active" & your wife will be able to get her card. However, you may have to wait a few days for DEERS to be updated.

Which is exactly why you should get her into DEERS ASAP. If you are in the Reserves you can still update/change DEERS. If you get that done before OCS then it will make things that much easier.
