IFS Locations/Wait Times

My Son graduates from NOCS on 7 OCT 05. What is the latest on where SNA's can go to IFS and what is the wait time? Is it possible to do IFS in San Diego?

He'll most likely do IFS at one of the Pensacola area schools. The wait time varies, depending on weather and how fast people get done. I've had buddies start with in a week or two of checking into NASC, yet I'm going to have had a 2 month wait, possibly more.

As far a doing IFS in San Diego, the NASC CO and XO are reviewing on a case by case basis. It's unlikely that he'll be able to do IFS in Sand Diego. Best bet is to tell him to talk to the IFS office in Pensacola and find out.

That's the info as of 0800 this morning. Hope it helps.

If your son is not down here in Pensacola yet, call NASC (IFS Office) and tell them that you want your son to go through IFS in San Diego. Trust me when I say that you're son is better off doing IFS somewhere else than here in Pensacola due to the wait times. SNAs do get the preference over SNFOs but there is still a wait...and it's basically a luck of the draw.

It's better to talk to them now while your son is there than his coming down here and being sent back to San Diego, or wherever he is at now.

FlyinDevil is right... tis better to do IFS anywhere other than Pensacola. The wait here is decently bad, especially for SNFO's.

Factoid: To give you an idea of the wait, the SNA's that checked into NASC on 1-Sept were told they'd not be starting IFS till Nov/Dec timeframe.

Sidenote: SNFO's are so on the backburner, AF Student Aviators have preference over SNFO's in P-cola. My IFS spot is pending that this AF 2LT doesnt show up to the brief on Monday.

Ignoring the wait time altogether, you should also realize that your son probably won't be able to do IFS at his top pick (like Milton or Mobile) since the way they've been deciding who goes to what IFS location is tending to be based on seniority. Marines have a year on most of us Navy folks due to TBS, so they got the first pick on IFS locations, and I got sent to Eglin (an 80-90 min. drive one way) as a result. If I had the option of doing it someplace else that was a lot closer to where I lived, I would jump all over that. Just my two cents.

Hey Sherm. I have the LT contact in San Diego since I'm also putting in the request for San Diego IFS. Basically, your son would have to call the LT and say how he has reported to NASC and requests to do IFS in SD. The LT would agree to talk responsibility for him, etc.

Also, this is a no-cost TAD. Basically, he wont get reinbursed for travel expenses. But he'll still get paid base pay, BAH and BAS.

As a reminder, he'll have a butt-load of paperwork during the 1st wk or so after check in. He could also go to the IFS office inside the API building and speak personally with them. Good luck.

Just for clarification, when one is no cost TAD their BAH is based off their permanent duty station. In the case of someone assigned to NASC doing IFS in SD, their BAH will be the Pensacola rate ($732), not San Diego rate ($1370)- a rather large difference.

I attempted to go No cost TAD and do IFS somewhere besides where i was stationed and my unit would not allow it (I forget their reasoning).
Knowing how NASC operates, I seriously doubt you're son's experience will be any different so he should plan on doing IFS in the Pensacola area.
