Does anyone know if the USMC requires its aviation contracted marines to go through IFS? I know of a few marines who went before TBS, and I was wondering if the individuals at TBS now will have to go through IFS before API.

IFS = Introductory Flight Syllabus

IFS provides Student Naval Pilots (SNP) with 25 hours of civilian aviation flight training and associated ground training prior to beginning the Naval Aviation training pipeline (Preflight Indoctrination). Students enrolled in IFS must meet the following program requirements: solo within 30 days; solo within 15 flight hours; complete at least three solo flights; complete one solo cross country flight; fly a minimum of 2.0 solo flight hours; fly a minimum of 24.0 total flight hours; complete the program within 60 days (commissioned officers) or 90 days (midshipmen).

As far as I know (and this is what my recruiter said just a few days ago when I talked to him), the sequence is OCS, commissioning, TBS, API, then flight school, and possibly IOC between TBS and API. You are not required to have time in-cockpit to become a SNA with the Corps.

However, I believe there is a program for PLC-air contractees to take flying lessons their senior year of college at a civilian airfield on the government's dime. I don't know many details on this, however.

The latest on the IFS deal. I talked with the Aviation Assistant for Officer Procurement (guy that drives the King Air), and he said that I would do FIP (I'm guessing Flight Indoctrination Program?) after PLC Srs, and before I would graduate college. Then I would go to TBS a month or two early and do IFS before I started TBS. I had never heard of FIP before, and I was astonished to think that I'll have 50 hours of free flight instruction by the time TBS starts. The FIP is 25 hours of flight training. 20 hours dual, and 5 solo. I'm assuming IFS will be much of the same. Anyone know anything else about all of this? Oh yea, this is for Marines, mind you. I don't know if Navy guys do FIP? Thanks.

I did FIP toward the end of my senior year ('01). The difference is, when I did it, I had to sign a six month extension to my contract....don't think this is still a requirement. It's the same thing as IFS. Once you do FIP, that IS IFS. Unless something has changed (and I'm sure plenty has) you only get to do one or the other.

Maybe it's something new? He never mentioned anything about signing an extra extension to my contract. It just didn't seem right (and too good to be true) that they'd give me 50 hours of flight time. I'll ask again in Feb. when he comes.

Well, if they DO still have the six month extention, I'd recommend just waiting until TBS. This will allow you to get paid as a LT and build time in grade for working about 3 hours a day in Mike Company while doing IFS. Either way, you currently have to get those hours under your belt before leaving Quantico for API.

It can be both before TBS or before API, all depending on when slots for IFS and TBS open up. All that is for certain is that before going to Pensacola you will definetely complete IFS (or FIP).

I was supposed to go to IFS next month before TBS, but recently found out that since I have already completed a solo cross-country (I'm a private pilot), I wasn't qualified for IFS. The same kind of situation applied to FIP and I wasn't qualified after I finished PLC-SRs. Just a heads up.

How many aviation contracts already have their private pilots? is it something i am going to need to look into before i start OCS and go on to TBS? I want fixed wing aircraft and you know might as well go for the f-18 so do you think i need to get more flight time to help get ready for that? just in your own opinions does it help that much?

If you complete your cross country solo you are ineligible for IFS. If you want to still do IFS, just don't do the cross country solo and you should still be eligible, regardless of your hours of flight time.

Very few Marines from my TBS class had flight hours before they were commissioned or even before they went to flight school. IFS is, when I did it, mandatory for flight contracts. You do not need to do extra hours on your own time and dime. Of course, going to an aeronautical school or having extensive flight time will probably be beneficial to your performance at flight school, at least in terms of being able to fly the airplane and understand the concepts being taught. Then again there are plenty of people who had prior flight experience who thought they were going to breeze past military flight school and got destroyed. It's a different environment.

Where is IFS done?

Is IFS in Pensacola like most of the other aviation stuff, or can they send you anywhere?

Just out of curiosity, how many times did most of you relocate between commissioning and getting to a fleet squadron?
