Internships During Time in BDCP?

Does anyone know if it is allowed to go out of state to do a semester-long internship when you are in BDCP? I ask because I would like to do an internship on the west coast. Would I still be paid during this time away from college? I am still in the application process so I am just kind of thinking ahead. What about the possibilities of doing an internship abroad? Any info would help.

Thanks

Not leaving the country would probably be reasonable, while leaving the country maybe much more difficult (relating to a security clearance). Talk to your recruiter. As with BDCP the main issue at hand is keeping your graduation date with the degree in your contract.

Doing an internship abroad could bring up a lot of problems like preventing you from getting a required security clearance for your designator, maintaining the required contact with your recruiter, taking the PRT every 6 months and overall accountability for you.

As for your question about getting paid, you would get paid. You enlist the Naval Reserve while in BDCP and then become entitled to basic pay, BAH and BAS.

Overall, talk to your recruiter. Keep in mind for planning purposes that you can change you academic degree completion program easily before you apply, but once you are in it become very difficult.

Yes as long as you are still in BDCP, you will be getting paid. You enlist (not in the reserve. you are technically active duty, no?) and get paid full active duty pay. Your BAH will be based out of the location of your NRD so it shouldn't change. Like it was stated above, if you keep your grad date the same, big Navy doesn't care. Ask and ye shall receive.

Do you think I would be able to include the internship in my 2 years left in my academic career plan? If I do include it I will have a full 2 years, if not, I would have 1.5 years remaining.

Like stated before, if your grad date does not extend from what it was originally then no big deal. Are you applying or are you already in BDCP looking to change your academic plan and fit this internship in?

I am in the process of applying. I was just concerned that they may look at a semester of doing an internship on my academic career plan with questions because the internship is not required for me to graduate.

A summer internship is probably more feasible than taking a normal fall or spring semester, especially when you could graduate earlier without the internship (which means the Navy can start getting their money's worth out of you sooner.) That and the Navy doesn't need its applicants to have internships for the jobs they do in the Navy - they'll train you to do the job the way they want it done.

I had co-op (think intern) during BDCP. I did not attend class the last 9 months of BDCP (normal for MY school, doing thesis research).

They just cared that I graduated on time.

If I do want to do the internship for sure, is this something my recruiter can influence when applying to BDCP and filling out the academic career plan?
