Anybody know if interservice transfer from the Navy to the Marine Corps is possible? I'm not an aviator, I was just wondering if it was possible to get orders to TBS for Marine Corps ground. Thanks.

Sorry, you won't be able to transfer straight to TBS. The real question will be if you can get orders to OCS... I would imagine that with OCS selection being as tough as it is right now it would be quite challenging to 1) get selected for an OCC class (there are only 3 per year), and 2) Convince the Navy, who has already dropped a mint to train you to let you resign your commission for a Marine Commission now.

Remember that OCS has a high attrition rate (it was 40 - 50% when I went), and alot of the times this is due to physical reasons. If you fall on a trail and jack your ankle up, you will be done with OCS and sent back to the civilian world, as Marine OCS does not have a medical rehabilitation company, it simply gets rid of everyone who gets hurt. At the same time I would imagine that once you resign your naval commission they won't be eager to let you back, as they have been laying off officers by the boatload lately.

A commission usually a commission, so are you sure they'd have to go to OCS? I do know that TBS is mandatory.

On a few rare occasions, we will have Navy flight students who get their wings and then do an interservice transfer to the Corps. Before they go to the FRS, they have to go to TBS - however, they don't go through Marine Corps OCS. I would imagine anything is possible, but on the whole rather improbable unless you have a special skill the Corps needs and the Navy is willing to let you go.

Is that right? Well I stand corrected! I am damn surprised that they would allow someone to be a Marine Officer without a Marine Sponsored Commissioning Program, but I guess it can happen. Disregard my last post.

I didn't know that either. It doesn't sound right as all Marines are supposed to go through the same training. The fact that Academy guys go through different training (only 6 weeks) is already strange to most people, but I can't even imagine someone just magically becoming a Marine and going to TBS.

Thanks for the feedback guys,

Taxman, the reason I didn't distinguish between Marine and Navy commissions, is because the Naval Academy Commissions officers both into both the Navy and Marine Corps. Also, the reason I asked this question is because all the instructions I found regarding interservice transfer all refer to transfers to and from the "Navy/Marine Corps," while I haven't seen anything about transfers between the too. To transfer from the Navy to say, the Army, you must fulfill your commitment. I was just seeing if there were different rules since the Marines are under the Department of the Navy. Anyone with good info feel free to jump on in!

Actually academy bubbas don't go to OCS anymore, you'll see them at TBS if you're they're for the summer. IIRC it was a 4 week course aimed at those seeking a Marine commission as opposed to the 1 week teaser that most midshipmen get.
