Interviews for LORs

I have two questions:

1) Is it common (or acceptable) to request interviews for the purpose of LORs from Navy officers for people who, like me, do not have any familial or social connection to current or retired officers?

2) Are there any officers who would be willing to consider speaking with me to determine if they might be willing to help me with an LOR?

Thanks in advance,

TL

P.S. I realize that this thread may exist, but the search feature inundated me with results as there are so many discussions involving letters and interviews. I apologize if I've overlooked an obvious thread in posting this.

As to question #1, the consensus on many of the monthly board thread seems to be NOT to cold call officers for LORs. LORs are supposed to be for people who can comment on your personal history, work ethic, etc. and have firsthand experience of it. However, there is an interview process for talking with current Naval Officers (which I did myself and from what I hear is now required of applicants). It is basically a quick review of you after having a sit-down discussion about your motivations/thoughts on Naval service/goals/etc.

Do the interviews have to be with Navy Officers? One of my professors is an Army 0-5, Head of ROTC, Ranger, etc. I'm not quite sure he knows me well enough to write a LOR, but I was thinking an interview would be a valid option; assuming it can be a non-Navy officer.

Absolutely not. Just because his time in leadership and judging the merits of his subordinates wasnt done on a big grey floating prison doesnt mean his word is worthless. The main thing to get out of an LOR is the same thing you will want on your OER/Fitrep/whatever the AF calls it, getting bullet points and statements made about you that dont sound like the same generic fluff the board members always see.

I would suggest doing an interview with a Naval Officer in the designator you are applying for. This might not be a rule, but it seems to make sense to me and that was the advice I was given. Just my opinion.

Well it sounds like the (almost) conesnsus is that it couldn't hurt to request an interview or two and hope to get a decent interview report or possibly an LOR out of it. Now my issue is that I don't really have any Navy connections. Can anyone help direct me toward a starting point for networking? I'm not afraid to call anyone, but I'd rather not play telemarketer.

Thanks,

TL

I am not sure how you would go about it if you are not close to a Navy base. I know that the interview is able to be done over the phone if you find an officer that is willing to do it. You will need to make sure that they have the interview form ahead of time. They will need to base the interview off of the form. I am not sure if the form has changed, but the one I used in Nov is NAVCRUIT 1131/5. I am sure you can google it and find it, if not let me know and I can probably email you a blank one.

Also, I am not sure if I am just confused off of your last post, but you SHOULD NOT try and get an LOR out of an interview, they are totally different. Try and get LOR's from people that personally know you. Do you have employers or college professors that can provide you with an LOR?

I can get LORs from folks I know. I must have made a careless error in my post. I understand the difference. I'll see what I can figure out about the interview. Thanks for the information.

I have a new question now: Is there a shelf life on Navy LORs? If so, what is it? Army has a 90-day expiration date on theirs, so I want to make sure that mine don't run out prior to my packet reaching the board.

Thanks,

-TL
