I was wondering if the mile swim during API is in a pool or some other body of water. Also do you know how big of a pool? 25 yd laps or olympic size laps?

It is done in conjunction with the helo drop. They take you out to the 1 mile marker bouy in the gulf and make you swim back to the beach right infront of the API building / MC D's . The powers at be figure it is much more realistic training. There will be a couple of safety boats on station if they arent fishing. Just pray that it is not jellyfish season during your swim!
It really wasn't that bad, we had one kid that the rescue swimmer had to pick up, but everyone else made it to the beach with plenty of time to spare.
Although, there was another guy that was so psyched out, he put some zip lock bags full of air in his flight suit, they booted him for integrity.

HAHAHA those are funny. But yeah its in a 25 yd pool, 36 laps, and someone counts for you.
By the time it would take someone to swim that far the current would have taken them past perdido key bridge.
