If I go USMC flight (hypothetical, all goes well) and i get jets, will the time ever come for me to switch to helos if i want to. I think it would be good to learn both aircrafts, but i dont know if the navy/corps would want to give you all that extra training.

No. There currently is no transition process from jets to helos. There is one for helo to jets or props. About the only thing that could get you into helos is some sort of condition that only disqualified you for jets but not for helos or C-130s. for example there was a guy who was allergic to his o2 mask and transitioned to helos. This happened during flight school (jets) so not after he was winged. He wasnt doing well grades wise anyway, and our opinion was the "allergy" was a way to hook up what was perceived as a good Marine by the senior Marine.

The answer to your question is basically no, if youre thinking about going jets and then helos. Plus the jet community would probably blackball you for even trying.

what about those that have serious sinus problems dq'ing them from pressurized cockpits/ejection seats? wouldn't they be able to transition to helos? as I remembr I met someone that did that.

Theres a transition/conversion board that meets every year and selects approx 2 helo pilots to transition to jets, they also pick two helo guys to be C-130 guys. With only 2 guys getting selected a year, the selection rate isnt that great. I know a couple of guys who did get picked up though. You have to have a pretty strong package though. Alot of quals, hours, etc.

Squid- like I said, if you have a unique case that would dq you from jets, but youd still be ok for helos, they would probably work with you.

The V-22 board did take some jet to tiltrotor transitions this year, but that will probably only be an option for another year or so. There's probably some funky billet out there somewhere that could get rotor time for a F/W guy, but it's probably fairly obscure and limited. You could always set your sights for wing commanding general--he flies whatever he wants!

He's the major general who commands a Marine Aircraft Wing. He's pretty high up there, but he does get to joyride in any of the aircraft in the wing. One of the perks of being in charge.
