Recently i have fallen in love with Judo, i have been taking it for about a month now. In my class there is a guy whom ive come to know well, he was an E-9 in the Marines with 28 years in the Corps, he also recieved the purple heart in Vietnam. He is also now one of my references. But my question is, how does Judo help you in the Marine Corps? What does the Marine Corps Martial Arts program encompass? Also does having any Judo under my belt help my chances of selection by the board? Or is it even looked at? I know these are a lot of questions at once but i thank you all in advance for any responses.

First off Judo is treated mostly like any other extra curricular activity. The more activities the more well rounded you are.
The Semper Fu program encompasses a little bit of many martial arts. Tan belt is msotly hitting and throwing, Gray gets into grappling a bit and more hitting kicking and I dont know waht comes after that becuase Im an aviator and havent progressed beyond that

my PTI at PLC really endorsed judo and jujitsu. He talked highly of south american (brazilian) and israli martial arts specifically for the grappling and throwing involved.

Judo gives you something to do during your liberty, so that you aren't just rotting in the barracks with a beer in one hand and an XBox controller in the other.

I thought that was the recline!
You needn't worry about MCMAP training. It's designed to funnel large classes of Marines through a basic curriculum with an extremely low failure rate. In fact, I've never seen any failures in the tan, grey, and green belt classes that I attended/observed. Judo or any martial art will help your acuity, but MCMAP is about as beautifully simple and basic as you could get and still be affective. Green does have a lot of throwing around other people's bodies, so I'm sure you'd excel with a Judo background. But then again, my point is that everyone excels - or at least passes. And it's S/U grading in the end...

Your judo experience will definitely help you in the MCMAP training. Right off my head I know of two techniques that are based on Judo throws. The hip throw (gray belt) and the shoulder throw (green belt) are prime examples. If you are serious about martial arts and the Corps, I would suggest attending one of the instructor courses. It is 3 weeks for MAI(green) and 6 weeks for MAIT(black 1st degree). The only attrition I have seen during these course were injury related. Yeah, these courses are infamous for literally breaking Marines. Remember its body hardening, not buddy bruising...

What does every Marine have to know? I think I've heard that everyone is at least a tan belt, but I'm not sure. And if we want to learn more, how available are the classes from the Marines?
