I just got home from taking my second ASTB. I took it almost two years ago, went down a different path, and now im back. I wanted to get better scores although my first ones I found out today were not that bad. I had a 47, 5,7,5. The first one I took was the paper version, not sure which test number. It was more difficult and time consuming than the computer one which I took today because you had to go back and forth from the book to the answer sheet and find the correct circle. I took the computer one, version5, and it was not as difficult. I got a 54, 7,8,7, and am happy with those scores. The recruiter showed me a printout from january which stated that for SNA a 65 and 8+ across the board was competitive, but he said they never had anybody score above 60 and stated my numbers were in the top 3-4 percent for the St. Louis area they had seen so he was very happy with that. Some things to look out for on the computerized test that kinda bugged me were that once you answer the question you have to select the next question. The screen refreshes like it goes to the next question automatically, but it does not after you answer. This messed me up on the spacial apperception section of the test because the pictures are pretty small and I was going quickly through it. The only section I used all of my time on was the math section cause I was working every problem out. I am very happy with my scores and will not retake the test because I dont think I can get any higher, nor do I feel I need to.

Getting Closer and Closer by the minute
Not bad scores I would say. With a good package you should get a good look by the boards. Good luck. When are you planning on haveing the whole package in? There are a few of us on here that are going through the process right now and I hope we all see each other in P-Cola.

just took my 2nd ASTB today

I'd like to thank everybody on this sight that has provided information to access study information. It really helped me on my second time around. The first time I took the paper version (Nov. '04) and I got a 52, two 5's, and a 6. Today (apr 28) I got a 57 and three 7's. My application is being processed right now for June OCS. I wasn't even expecting a slot this early but my recruiter said he just had 9 pilot slots open up last week for the region (Atlanta, GA). He said my scores were competitive, but does anybody know anyone that has gotten in with similar scores (I'm applying for Navy)?

As far as studying goes, I really worked over the Marine gouge and the ASTB prep test. Those two were on the www.navygouge.com website. I also used the Arco and Cliff books along with an ASVAB study guide for extra work on mechanical problems. For aviation and nautical information I studied the FAA's "How to become a pilot book" and the nautical gouge on the website above. I thought the test was a little easier than the paper version I took earlier and to be honest I'm not sure how I got so low on my scores since I was shooting for at least 8's. I guess you just can't miss any for those kinds of scores and a few questions are just tricky and you're left with a tough choice between two answers. For the spatial apperception I used Microsoft Flight Simulator and flew out of an airport that was close to the ocean and had a cliff like on the test.

One more tip, if you're starting from scratch and you've never taken physics or a lot of math courses or you just need to brush up on the mechanical concepts - try to get a hold of an M-CAT study guide. When I was considering med school, I took the medical admissions test and took a Kaplan (test prep company) course that has great physics help in their Physical Sciences course book. It basically helps you learn the concepts so you aren't just memorizing problems and you can really understand the material. It also has great study questions.

Good luck to everybody out there - kick some ass on your tests!

I think those slots may be nationwide because my recruiter (in Fargo, ND) had mentioned that there were some pilot slots open for this summer. He wanted us to ask anyone who may be a good candidate to take a look at the possibility...

My roomate applied for the June OCS class (Navy), and was rejected with a 62 7/7/7. The other day, his recruiter called him and told him that there were 9 slots that just opened up. Could be a coincidence, but seems like a national thing. Good luck!

-this was in the San Diego area

Just for everyone's reference, I was told a few moments ago by the NY recruiting office that the 9 openings for sna mentioned above have already been filled as of today (monday the 2nd). The explanation my recruiter got for the apparent rapid need - fulfillment of slots timeframe is that CNRC had quite a few applications already in hand and simply chose from them on more or less the same day. As a result, this obviously didnt allow too large of a window for others to send in their apps for consideration once the need was made known.

I was also told that as someone who was already accepted for snfo and awaiting ocs, that I would not even be considered (regardless of qualifications, stats, or any lack thereof) for sna unless I were to reject my snfo offer first. Makes sense, and just amounts to whether you want to roll the dice if you're in a similar situation to mine.

Just thought I would pass that along. The only credibility I can lend to it is that its what I was just told by my recruiter.

Best of luck to all.
