I just took the ASTB version 3 at NRD Jax. I haven't received my scores yet. Here are a few observations about the test.
1. The math section was MUCH easier that I was expecting. Study the ASTB gouge on this site and the Peterson's GRE/GMAT review and you should be fine. I was a good mixture of word and regular algebra problems. Here are a few examples of problems (not the actual problems):
x=2y - 9, y=3x+4, x =?
the cube root of 1728 is
If x can do y in z hours, and k and do y in f hours, how long will it take to complete y if x and k work together?
2. The reading section was about as hard as I was expecting. In my opinion that hardest part of the test. Others on this site have said that same things, and I concur. This section was all short passages and for statements about the passage. On 95% of the questions, either all seemed correct or none seemed correct. The other 5% were obvious. Here is an example(copy and pasted directly from another site, did not verify correctness this is just an example of the question type):
Dr.Jane Wright insisted in later years that her father, surgeon Louis Wright, never pressured her to study medicine; indeed he warned her how hard becoming a doctor would be. His very fame, within and beyond the African American community, made her training hard in some ways. "His being so good really makes it difficult," Wright told an interviewer soon after she graduated from medical school in 1945. "Everyone knows who Papa is." (BB pg.455)
A) her father warned her not to study medicine
B) her father flaunted his success
C) she did not spend adequate time studying
D) she shared her father's desire for fame
E) she was inevitably compared to her father
3. The mechanical section was more difficult than I thought it was going to be, but if you study the ASTB gouge on this site you should have no problems. There was only a handful of questions that required any kind of calculations.
Hope this helps.
I will post my score when I receive it. Thanks for all of the help on this site and to everyone who has posted helpful topics and links.
