Pretty cool photo from a TWZ article I read after the EP-3E story:

I kinda enjoy every time we come in the main gate, and pass by the VP line, I always tell my boys to look over and see the "spy plane". They always get really excited. I know that is probably not the proper term anymore, but it sounds way cooler than "reconnaissance plane" I think.

Side note, I heard that after the mission birds are sundowned, the straight sticks are still funded for another 40 years of bouncing so that "a clear deck can't reasonably ever be assured in NUW for the foreseeable future." That is a direct quote from an admiral.

I wonder who’s going to bounce them or where they will go on the line? For the VUP-11 pilots to maintain PPT? 30 doesn’t have P-3s anymore, neither does VP-69 and I think VX-30 are the model managers now.

Are most of you aware an RQ-4 was "inflight terminated" by accident over the Edwards Complex many years ago?

As I recall, a different Mission Control Element at Nellis was doing test, and during that process, someone "flipped the switch" to test the inflight terminate.

Well, they hadn't considered that a Global chicken might be airborne, and sure enough, the one at 50,000+' over SoCal was within range... received the signal... and did what it was told. It quit flying, and spun into the desert.

So chalk up one kill for Iranians AND one for the USAF.

Another funny story.

We had a U-2 pilot that physically touched an RQ-4. Shortly after that, it crashed.

Months later, he touched another one while overseas. That one crashed a few days later.

We tried to get him to walk the Beale flightline and rub every RQ-4 on the base! He wouldn't do it!
