Hello,

Okay, I've already started asking people (2 USAF Captain's and 1 USAF Lt Col) to write me my letter of recommendations. One of them asked me what do I want on it. My question is, are there any suggestions from all of you who have succesfully gotten into BDCP as to what I should suggest be put on my letter?

Thanks in Advance,
FlyinHigh215

You want it to be a good character reference...so when I asked people to give me a letter of recommendation I gave them all of my accomplishments, most of them had me in class (high school teachers), so they were able to tell them about my demiener (sp?) in class, my leadership ability, and how I interacted with other students. Remember its not all about getting big wigs to write you letters.

I would offer the same advice as the individual above me. I only had two letters of recommendation and two letters from places I worked. I didn’t have any Officers, either retired or otherwise, write my letters. I simply chose people who have known me for years and who have good standing within the community.

They referenced my achievements both in athletics and in the community (i.e. volunteering at the soup kitchen, etc.). They should reference your character as well as explain why they are willing to associate themselves with you. There isn’t a steadfast rule or template for writing these letters. I think they are there to compliment your package as a whole, rather than being the focus of it. Some would no doubt disagree but that is my take on the situation.

I hope this helped.

Just make sure that they are from credible, and well established sources. I'm sure this goes without saying, but a good letter of reccommendation starts off by explaining what their credentials are, and why they feel they are able to evaluate your performance. For instance, if you have a letter from a naval aviator, they know what it takes to become one, and hence are able to evaluate your ability to become one.

For my letters of reccomendation I made sure I had some variety, I did have one of my friend's dad write one for me who flew in the Air Force. But I also had people from the university adminstration write them. These people did have impressive titles but they did know me well so they could comment on some of the things that have been mentioned above.

And just a quick story I know someone had a letter of reccomendation from one of the Kennedy brothers which I guess helped a ton. So for what it's worth name recognition seems to have influence.

For mine, I had a police officer, fire dept officer, friend who works for a secretive agency and an engineering from Sikorski. They all said really nice things about me... but I never got to see what...

Okay, now I ran into a strange situation. Now, I'm being asked to write my own letter! According to one of my letter sources, I'll write the letter and if it looks good he'll sign it. Supossedly it's similar to how it is in active duty...well at least in the AF. Any of you want to give me suggestions as to what I should write?

Thanks in advance,

That is touchy ground, and not supposed to be how it goes down. I'm not going to say too much about it, but if you do a basic search, im sure you can come up with all the info that separates a good LOR from a bad one. Also looking under motivational statements might yield some useful information.

Something to the effect of, "This man is a damn hero. He fearlessly carried my wife and children out of a burning building, saving their lives. I have named my newborn son after him; FlyinHigh Junior." should probably work. JK of course. :D
