Hello all! I first joined this site because my husband is in the Navy...now (on June 14th) my little brother joined the Marines in the delayed entry program. He still has one year of high school left, but he has already gone to meps and swore in. I was just kinda wondering what all I should expect. I am not sure he realizes how hard it is really going to be. He got his ship date for Basic...it is May 23, 2005. Anyone have any pointers for him to prepare himself? Any help would be appreciated.

Tons of pull ups, crunches, and running to start with. Since he has almost a year before heading to boot...that is more than enough time to get in really good shape. If his recruiter has an O-course or and E-Course close by, run those as much as possible. If he is lifting weights, don't worry about going heavy for size...lighter weight for higher reps (endurance is key). A lot of the other 'Chaos' that will be provided by the staff is hard to prepare for...just mentally get as prepared as possible (by talking with his recruiter about what to expect). I'm sure there are a few other things that would help....hopefully some other Marines will post some thoughts. Best of Luck to your brother!

There's really not a whole lot you can do to prepare for Boot Camp. Like Triple said, diffinitely be in shape, and know the general orders, and they'll pretty much teach him the rest. I went knowing little to nothing about the Marine Corps, or military for that matter and looking back I don't feel like I was at any disadvantage. One thing I would recommend is having family/friends write as much as possible. Mail is a huge moral booster and his only contact with the 'outside' world for a while. Just don't expect the same amount of mail back, free time is very limited.

If you and your family can, try to make it to his graduation, for one it'll mean a lot to him, and second, it's very impressive!

Good luck
