there sure is a lotta levers in the cockpit!
the drivers must have been busier than one legged men in an ass kicking contest.
i think most of the metal was magaesium, not exactly a fire retardent.

That dude flew with us during Fleet Week a couple years ago. Then it was the Osprey... What's consistent? Phrogs and Cobras...

Pops flew H-34's in VN and Japan in the late '60's. Said it had the world's worst-designed flight controls; you literally needed three hands for startup. But, it got him home in one piece when Every Peasant With a Rifle was shooting at every Yankee air pirate helicopter they saw.

Used to be a "good deal" that while waiting between pre-flight (API for you youngsters) and VT-10 you could go up to Whiting and get some special crew time in these.

Got your flight pay started earlier than by waiting until you started to fly @ VT-10. IIRC you needed 6 hours to get the extra pay started.

Full-Autos in an H-34 - that was fun:eek:

Here's a pic of two H-34s that aren't in quite the same mint condition. The first one is the second oldest resident on site (Gold star if you know what the oldest one is).

One reason (as I'm sure you know) that those peasants weren't nearly the "issue" that they would be today was the engine, as seen in pic 3. That old radial protected against bullets and trees pretty well, or so a crusty HT sim instructor /former -34 pilot told me during one of my CPTs in flight school.
