Looking to be More Competitive for OCS

Cvinson

New Member
Hello All,

I am trying for my second attempt for the Navy Officer Candidate School for Pilot program. My first attempt I was disqualified because my vision was 20/400 and I failed the depth perception test (I passed two a month earlier at a different location). This past summer I had bladeless eye surgery (no flaps) and I now have 20/15 vision.

-My ASTB scores are 5,5,5 and I believe OAR is somewhere in the 50's.
-My undergraduate GPA is a 2.78- I know it is not a great GPA but this year I started my Master's in Aeronautical Science and have a B+ average.
-I have a State Senator, a Captain, and a Commander recommendations along with another Captain's commendation and award for work.
- I am in great shape; I have participated in sports and fitness competitively since High School. I also have been swimming since the age of four.
- I have my own flight simulator system I spend a minimum of an hour or two flying on.

I am looking to try the ASTB again (excited about the new test with the simulator) and continue to work on my Master's Degree. But I am still looking for ways to make myself competitive for OCS to become a Pilot. Any helpful advice or suggestions will be more than helpful. Thank you for your time in advance!

Very Respectfully,
Cvinson

ASTB scores are at the top of the priority list when it comes to picking up SNA. You'll need to boost those a few points to offset your GPA. That's pretty much it, at least from my experience going through the selection process. Good luck

Can't fix your UG GPA, but your plan is what you should be doing to give yourself a better chance.

^^^Spot on!^^^ That says it all. You spend a paragraph on your eyesight, which apparently has been fixed. Also, you seem to be aware that the low ASTB scores ARE the problem, so the answer is obvious... RAISE THEM! There is probably not too much gouge yet on the new ASTBs, but try to find someone on AW who has survived it with decent scores. The material in the new test can't be too much different, all the same areas important for aviation. The new simulator should give you a boost, given your 'simu' experience.;)

So re-crack the books, raise those scores, and maybe a bit of volunteer work at a local hospital, ol' folks home etc. time permitting, to pad your resume'. Good luck!:)

I am going to let my 'few remaining' hairs down, and expound upon the volunteerism I discussed above; hopefully to improve the chances of applicants package, perhaps giving those with marginal GPA/ASTB/OARs a chance to make up somewhat, for low numbers.

As indicated jn my profile, I am 79 years young. What I haven't indicated is that I am mobility-limited (arth), happily residing in a GREAT "Assisted Living" home in Sandy Eggo for the past 7 years. I mention this only because we have a continuous flow of great volunteers, some of whom have become good friends. They are mostly young adults some High School, but mostly students from SDSU, USD, teaching Hospitals, Nursing Schools, and various Community Colleges. Even have had ACDU Sailors & Marines on occasion.:)

Some of them have said they had dreaded vol'ing in an ol' folks home, but found they didn't have to do dirty work (diaper, shower asst, etc), some for dining room servers, maybe some driving for resident shopping, Dr appts, or lunches at local eateries. The majority at our residence is just passing some time conversing with us'n residents. For myself and numerous military residents, those vols interested in the military, are directed to us. We have a bunch of vet CPOs (of which one is a 93 -YO PH Survivor. I get to be OinC by default, One lovely co-ed Shawny, is doing a term paper on the ol' Bee's military career, which is quite flattering (except it's a college HISTORY course,,,arrrggh:eek:)! I guess We are pseudo-Recruiters. The word got out that we tell 'cool sea stories' which I enjoy, as y'all know, ...hell my time is limited, and I don't want to take them with me!
The point of this post is to promote volunteerism. Various other opportunities include:
1. Hospitals, mainly driving hospital wheels transporting mobile patients hither, and sometimes yon.
2. Tutoring, usually HS & JUCO students.
3. Scoutmasters/Assts, Cub and Boy/Girl Scouts.
4. For the HS/College 'JacqueStroppes' - coaching at all levels from PeeWee/LL to HS/College intramural.
5. Volunteering at food banks, "feeding the hungry" kitchens, etc.

Just a few, too many others too mention, but my arthritic typing fingers are too stiff!
But I am still looking for ways to make myself competitive for OCS to become a Pilot. Any helpful advice or suggestions will might be more than helpful. Thank you for your time in advance!
Senor Cvinson, I'm hopin' this helps.;)
