LOR Question

Quick question regarding the impact of LOR's on pro-rec and final select. I have a letter from a retired VADM Pilot who was CNATRA at one point in his career. How much impact would his very impressive letter have on my pro-rec assuming the rest of my application is solid? My recruiter says that having a Flag level letter labels your application as "Flag Level Interest" and that if not selected a letter must be sent to the VADM explaining the non-select. Is this true? Just curious. I am applying for SNFO. Thanks.

Nonsense. The Navy is not a Blue Blood only organization. While, perhaps a Mid, the son of a Four Star, were failing at the USNA, the father could have great influence in the USNA graduating said Mid.

However; that VADM knows that the selection board will do the right thing, based on solid selection criteria. Of course, the VADM's letter would be carefully reviewed and if a board member knew the VADM, may choose to write a letter. Otherwise it is a stellar LOR, nothing else.

A personal letter from the VADM to a board member may have some sway, but I firmly believe, very little impact.

My experiences and opinion mirror the Chief's. If the VADM really knows you it will be very helpful as a LOR. But there are many other things the board looks at. A VADM letter does not guarantee a selection, perhaps extra careful review.
